Hello. Yes it is accessible and a fairly easy job. All you need is a set of socket wrenches. Here is a link to a step by step set of detailed instructions. http://www.ehow.com/how_4506251_replace-alternator-vw-beetle.html

That said, your best bet is to buy a rebuilt alternator at your auto parts store. Then when you remove the old one you will turn it in at the store to be recycled. Joe

4 thumbs up please. ty.

2002 Volkswagen Beetle 1.9L Turbo Dsl SOHC 4cyl

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine undercover, if equipped.
  3. Disconnect the wiring from the alternator. If necessary, mark the wires with tape or other means to ensure they are connected properly upon installation.
  4. Loosen the belt tension, and remove the drive belt from the alternator.
  5. Remove the alternator adjustment bolt, followed by the pivot bolts.
  6. Carefully lift the alternator from the bracket.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in position on the mounting bracket, and install the pivot bolt. On later engines with automatic belt tensioners, install the upper mounting bolt.
  2. Install (but do not tighten) the alternator adjustment bolt (earlier models only).
  3. Place the alternator drive belt on the pulley.
  4. Adjust belt tension and tighten the mounting and adjustment bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  5. Connect the wiring to the alternator. If tape was used to identify the wires, make sure it is removed once the wires are connected.
  6. Install the engine undercover, if equipped.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this helps.

Why does oil light turn red and beeps when stooping at light and then comes on and beeps continuesly after driving awhile on my 2002 Volkswagon Beetle Turbo S?

First check the oil level. pull out dipstick with engine off, wipe, and re-"dip" it to see . If the level is O.K., it may be serious . See a mechanic.

I am locked out of my 2002 VW Beetle, The key FOB is in the trunk and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on accessing the trunk?

Do you AAA, or roadside assistance? They will unlock it. Buy a VW Key, get code from dealership by VIN#, have locksmith make a key or dealership.

Problem with front headlights always going out. It seems like I replace headlight bulbs every 6 mos. on 2002 VW New Beetle.

Check voltage at battery with engine running with a volt meter. Turn all accessories on and lights rev engine up and see if voltage goes above 14.8, if yes voltage regulator in alternator may be your problem.

Secodary Air Pump 2001 Beetle 1.8 Turbo

Had one changed on my daughters 1998 VW Beetle, cost nearly $650 for part plus installation. Failure came while her car was in Boston so I was unable to complete the task. The part is readily accessible in the front of the engine compartment, and not all that difficult to replace. If you can change brakes, alternators, serpentine belts, etc. you should be able to change the secondary air pump. Check with your local parts supplier like AutoZone or Murrays, they may have tips & tricks to make the job a bit easier.

Good luck, and have confidence.
