Noise from 2008 Sienna Engine

I just bought a 2008 Sienna LE 3 weeks ago. From 2 days ago, I found out the car from 0 to 40mph and around 2.5rmp, I would hear some very sharp noise from the Engine...or I should call it sluggish noise??maybe....Anyway, does anyone experiense the issue?

My brand new 2008 Sienna has the same problem. I didn't hear during the test drive, but its certainly there now.

I'm looking for ideas b4 I take it into the service dept.

I have the same noise from my 2008 Sienna when the engine cold. Cold as in less than 20 degrees F and colder. The noise goes away when the engine warms up. I took it to the dealer and they left it sit all night in the cold. They heard the noise when they started the van the next morning. They claimed to have heard the noise before and stated that there is a Tech Bulletin from Toyota about it. They claim the noise is related to the way the pistons operate in the cylinders of the aluminum engine block. Toyota claims the noise does not indicate any damage is being done. They recommend using synthetic oil to reduce the cold engine noise. I understand their answer, I don't like it. Next time I change the oil, I will use synthetic and see if it changes.

Does the sharp noise cause the rpm's to jump? I'm a new 08 Sienna owner myself and have a case posted as well. Seems likes when stopping (downshifting) my rpms will jump for a second. I'm wondering if our issues are similar or totally different.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I went to the dealership and they found out it's the noise from the exhaust system. Toyota has known such issue, but they said they were going to resolve it. I have gone thru the arbritation process with CDSP. I was NOT in favor by the CDSP decision. They said there was NOT a safety issue and they can't enforce Toyota to do anything. I encouraged you guys should file complaint in CDSP again. Maybe Toyota would work on such issue or recall if there were more complaint for such problem. Good luck and I really dont' have much suggestion how to go forward. Maybe you guys would have better luck with Toyota.

I brought our 2008 Sienna with 6000 mile in for a service due to engine noise as well. The sound is like lifters or some valve train part will come through the valve covers when the engine is cold. The dealer said "we cant hear the sound". They must be deaf. What triggers the lemon law? if a rocker arm comes through the hood?

2001 Toyota Sienna CEL displayed code P1150 & P0420 what could be the problem

Mine is a 2001 Sienna LE. I got the P0420 code and the dealer want to replace an engine control computer for $1600. I've found posts that say you can replace your oxygen sensors, which still costs around $100 each. The P0420 seems to be emissions related. When my check engine light comes on, I run the highest grade, no ethanol gas, and usually within a couple of tanks, the light goes off again. The last time it happened about 2 wks ago, I put in the 93 octane no ethanol premium and a can of Seafoam and within a half a tank, the light went out. Your problem might be more serious, and I don't know what the 1150 code is, but so far that's worked for me.

When I first start the 2008 Toyota Sienna the valves sound real loud for the first 2 or 3 miles.....even sounds like a diesel engine as it starts the pull. I took it to the dealer and they said the noise...

something is restricting the flow to the valve lifters. I like Marvel Mystery Oil brand
to clean oil passage and quiet noisy lifters. may take a week of driving to notice the difference. If that doesnt help I would find another dealer that will take a little better look at the problem

I just bought a 2008 Sienna w/ 44,000 miles. When the engine is cold, doesn't have to be really cold, I hear this ticking noise (not loud) when engine is under slight acceleration between 1500- 2000 rpm....

Sounds like you are describing lifter noise. Go to the car store and buy a pint of Berrymen's Chemtool. Next time the engine is cold, pour the Chemtool into the engine oil. Do your normal driving for the next few days or weeks until you have 150-200 miles (none of them should be highway miles) on the engine, then have the oil changed. Drive for 2000-3000 miles, and do the same thing all over again. Repeat this a couple of times. If the lifter loosens up, your good to go. If it doesn't, then it will have to be repaired by tearing into the engine.

Winter Tires for Toyota Sienna 2008 LE

Going one "step" larger is fine but don't forget that in going to a slightly taller tire, you will be changing the final drive ratio. If you have any performance problems (like going up-hill) taller tires will make that problem worse. Your speedometer will be affected slightly as well (car will be going a few miles per hour faster than what you see on speedometer).
Best thing to do about choosing a winter tire has little to do with size and more to do with tread design...The more aggressive the tread and side lugs, the better it will go through snow. But with aggressive tread comes road don't go overboard with that unless you don't mind road noise. Best tread design I've found is something similar to Goodyear Wrangler R/T. They seem to be a good compromise between both.
