I just bought a 2006 chevy colbalt that was salvage but fixed but didnt get the airbags checked. The light is always on does that mean i need to get them serviced and if so how or where i go?

Hey, my mate had the same problem, just in a Mini, he went to a garage and they told him the sensor in the passenger seat was broken, and the entire seat needed to be changed, costing around 2.250$. He searched a little around and found an airbag emulator, that gets your system to think someone is always seated. In case of an accident the airbag will ALWAYS go off, on both driver and passenger seat. First of all you need to get this problem fixed ASAP. While the airbag light is illuminated, your SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module aka: the brain of your airbag system) shuts of power to the airbags. In which, if you are in an accident your airbags will not deploy while this light is illuminated. You need to take your vehicle to a GM dealership. A Tech 2 scantool is needed to retrieve the code from the SDM. Hopefully it won't be a costly repair, but is something that defineatly needs to be corrected soon. Good luck and hope all works well.
seems to be my mantra this time of year (condensation). check the relay for the airbags... be advised because it is the airbag... to prevent accidental deployment of the airbag when you replace the relay... unhook the battery while you do that.
