Question about 1987 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

I have a 1986 pontiac firebird with a 2.8l v6 engine and i have had performance problems with this car since i bought it a few years back. ive changed the fuel pump and sending unit and done distributor work to it but it still bogs out if i mat the throttle. ive asked mechanics from dealerships and even backyard mechanics and no one can figure out what the problem is. all i want is a nice smooth driving car. Thanks for your time, Mike

To really help i would need to hear the engine running as spot guessing would cost a lot to replace parts and you don't want to be replacing parts that are not need, could i ask has the cams been checked, if so is there any flat spots. when the engine is running is it tip tip tip from the cams or tap tap tap. while on idle. any more info would help to identify the problem even cleaning the injectors more info would be help full

SOURCE: 99 gmc no power when passing or climbing

It could be electric fuel pump stall. The pump isn't pumping fuel fast enough. This model may have a inline fuel filter before the fuel pump as well that might need replacing.

SOURCE: I have a 2000 GMC

I think you'll find sender & pump are all one assy. What is the reason for changing. If it's the gauge, have you removed, cleaned contacts & re-attached wire plug at pump/sender assy, to see if it would cure your problem? Personally, it's not something I'd want to do twice in a short time, so if I was replacing one (if parts are available to do so) I'd replace the other, unless difference in price was extreme.

Yes the smog pump was used on this year and engine. If it is missing you will need all the other parts in the Air Injection system as well.

I've often heard that some Pontiac engines (vintage 1980-2002) used a plastic or quiet type timing chain and sprockets. Owners of these vehicles I have talked to said that this kept them from buying...

Hi,
No one has ever used plastic gears and chains. Some of the older big block models used timing gears with nylon teeth. This is true for all manufacturers and I believe ford still uses them in some engines. The disavantage to the nylon teeth was they would wear out somewhat faster, usually in the 80K-100K range. The pontiac V6 3800 engine has had steel toothed gears from 1986 to present and considered the most reliable V6 model ever built. While it is rare to actually break a timing chain under normal driving conditions, it does happen in race applications. However, when teeth and chains wear out, rough running and high fuel consumption due to poor mechanical time is the result. 350 GM engines were recommended to replace timing sets at 80K miles for optimum performance and were notorious for chewing off teeth. The aftermarket high performance replacement sets were made of cast iron or tempered steel. Double roller chain types, while noisier, lasted longer with fewer timing relasted issues. I had a 1979 firebird for 17 years with 200K+ miles on it and it still ran like a champ, so like anything else, proper maintenance and good driving habits have a huge affect on engine component life....Mike

What can i do without

Everything but the catalytic converter. I live in TN, the emissions test that I have to pass is a sniffer test. I have absolutely no emissions controls on my car, but when it comes time to pass emissions , i bolt the converter back on. Does fine.
