Question about 1999 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

Replaced fuel pump and filter but still won't start

I have a 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo with 180,000 miles. Every now and then my check airbag light comes on and beeps on the dashboard and at night sometime the lights on hte gear shift trun off and on. After about an hour or two on the road, the a/c doen't stay very cool and blows weaker.
One day last week I tried to start it up and it won't start. There was lots of clicking noises and then nothing. We replaced the battery and then it started for a few minutes with the fuel guage reading at empty. Even though the night before I filled the tank up. Now it wouldn't start after that. Had the fuel pump and fuel filter replaced but still not working. I had to have the jeep towed to the mechnaic's shop. Mechanic said he thinks it is an electrical short in the system. Should I go to another mechanic or take it to a jeep dealer and have them look at it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take it to another mechanic, and let them know if not problem found you won't pay, you know what, there is some ground circuits ATACHED to the engine block on the passenger side, make sure they are tie and complete check one by one by pulling gently and make sure they are ok, also tell your mechanic to check the number 4 and 5 conectors on the obd2 conector for a known good ground, if not ground or weak ground then doble check any ground coming from batterie to body or from engine block to wiring harnes, most of times they are black in color with white strip on it, goos luck and let me know,
also this jeeps have very coming problem with bad crank sensors
but with all the symptoms i'm almost positive thatn you will find a ground problem

Check the crankshaft position sensor, i have repaired 3 Jeeps (after the owner spent a lot of time and money replacing fuel pumps,TPS, and many other items) then got frustrated, brought it to me and within an hour it was running fine with a new CPS

Where is the fuel filter and fuel pump located on a 1999 jeep cherokee grand laredo? having issues want to change fuel filter thanks

Either above or in a little (removeable) metal "cage" almost directly over the rear axle. Follow the fuel lines and you can't miss it! Cheers!

I cant find the obd plug in on my 94 jeep grand cherokee laredo and my jeep will turn over but is hard to start what would cause this?

It does not have an obd11 connector, it's too old. The extended crank time could be a couple of things though. I've seen problems with fuel pumps, fuel pump relays and crankshaft sensors. How many miles on it? Has the fuel pump or filter been changed before?

Steps to replace fuel pump on 1999 jeep cherokee laredo 4wheel dr

how are the spark plugs?

would start with those.

the fuel filter is usually located under the hood by the intake manifold and attached to the firewall of the car. the pump is located right by the fuel tank and if you cant see it then its inside the fuel tank. (you will have to lower the fuel tank down to get to the pump.)

The crank and cam sensor's are very common problems on these jeeps. Check them or have someone check them with a scanner. one or both are most likley the problem.

Fuel fileter

Get under the vehicle and start at the fuel tank and go forward you will find it. If its a Grand Cherokee Laredo the fuel filter is located inside the fuel pump so the whole fuel pump has to be replaced

93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Could be a sensor.I'm thinking more along the lines of a fuel pump or fuel filter. If the fuel pump is going bad..similar symptoms.Would be advisable to install a pressure gauge at the engine, and check fuel pressure when it's acting up.
