A balljoint removal tool is definately the proper way to remove the ball joints. harbour freight does carry them but there not the best tool provider. also if the ones your replacing aren't greaseable your better off putting greaseable fittings will defineatly make a difference.

i enclosed a link with more helpful tip and installation process for ball joint removal and installation

I need to change the lower ball joint on my 89 f150 4x4 how do i do it

remove brakin system(caliper pads rotor) then disconnect outer tie rod, remove cotter pins on both ball joint nuts and remove nuts, then separate hub from i-beam, on the bench remove spring clip holing ball joint and press out, press in new joint and install hub in reverse order of dissassembly, apply grease to axle regrease bearings and caliper sliders, you will need a ball joint separator and a ball joint press, use new cotter pins

Automatic 4x4 locking hubs one side not locking in

There is a possibility the axel U-joint is binding, this will put side load on the hubs and keep them from working properly. Turn the steering wheel either far right or left and with front of truck off the ground or the front end disengaged, see if the axel shafts turn free, both sides. If there is binding the U-joint(s) will have to be replaced.

Replacing the front ball joints on a 97 ford f250 4X4

There is a three step procedure for both sides of this vehicle. The ball joints can be changed but you need to remove the locking hubs, the lh/rh spindles then remove the balljoints. I would suggest buying a Haynes (or other)Manual around 25.00(a good investment) or I can post some directions to you but it is too lengthy to post here. Let me know Wayne
