Question about 2003 Audi TT

Rear brake squealing intermidtently after install of new audi brake pads........repair shop attempted a fix which included new calipers and turned the rotors......problem still exists in forward and when turning.......most notable at low speed up to 40mph .............please help!

Recommend cleaning the brake caliper and pads.
Some front/rear brake pads may have an adhesive (sticky) backing, which helps adhere the brake pad to the brake caliper. If the vehicle is equipped with this type of a pad, remove this sticky backing and any residual adhesive from the baking plate of the brake pad and brake caliper. Some front/rear brake pads have an anti-vibration backing plate (non-sticky). Do not remove this type of backing.
Clean the pads and sand with 80 to 120 grit paper not to much
Try Chamfering the brake pad edges on a file (bascialy cut the edge of the pad down)
prior to reassembly use a high temp Plastilube Moly3 on contact points and the springs.

Hope this helps it is a common problem for these cars

Cheap pads probably not organic. Let me guess, they are lifetime pads. These pads are too hard and will always squeal, use organic pads only. Also, they may have not properly greased the caliper slide bolts.

How to change brake pad and check rotors

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.

  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.

To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Front wheel
    • Clip, 2 caliper pins, the anti-rattle spring then remove the 2 brake pads
      and the 4 anti-squeal shims

To Install:

CAUTION
Only replace brake pads on 1 side of the
vehicle at a time. Failure to use this procedure could cause the caliper pistons
on the opposite side of the vehicle to pop out requiring the reconditioning or
replacement of the brake caliper.


  1. Remove a small amount of brake fluid from the master cylinder.
  2. Install a used brake pad into the caliper and compress the caliper pistons.
  3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
  4. Install or connect the following:

    • Anti-squeal shims to the new brake pads
      NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced
      together with the pads.

    • 2 brake pads
    • Anti-rattle spring and the 2 caliper pins
    • Clip
    • Front wheel

  5. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  6. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

Rear
To Remove:


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of
    this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Rear wheel

    • Anti-squeal shims on each brake pad
    • 2 disc brake pads with anti-squeal shims to the caliper assembly

  2. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to the sliding part of 2 caliper slide
    pins.
  3. Install or connect the following:

    • Disc brake caliper assembly with 2 caliper slide pins
    • Torque to 65 ft-lbs (88 Nm)
    • Rear wheel

  4. Depress the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  5. Check the brake fluid level and top off as needed.

      1. Torque to 90 ft-lbs (123 Nm)

    • Front wheel

Will I need a caliper reset tool kit to change the brakes on my 2007 toyota sienna or will a standard c-clamp do the job? And since it is an ABS system, I assume that brakes must be bled, correct?


Brake Pads Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Remove the front wheels. Front brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5838.gif

  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder.
  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and remove the brake caliper from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.
  6. Close the bleeder after the piston has reached the bottom of the caliper bore.
  7. Remove the brake pads, support plates, wear indicators and anti squeal shims.
  8. Remove the slide pins and bushings from the caliper support.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate the slide pins and bushings with brake grease.
  2. Install the bushing on the slide pin.
  3. Install the slide pin on the caliper support.
  4. Install the brake pad support plates on the caliper supports.
  5. Lubricate the anti squeal shims with brake grease.
  6. Install the anti squeal shims on the brake pads.
  7. Install the pad wear indicator facing upward and install the pads on the caliper support.
  8. Install the caliper on the support.
  9. Install the 2 mounting bolts, hold the slide pins and tighten 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  10. Fill the reservoir and bleed the brakes.
  11. Install the front wheels.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Loosen the caliper bleeder. Rear brake caliper (exploded view) toyota-09-00-5842.gif

  3. Hold the slide pin; remove the 2 mounting bolts and rear brake caliper assembly from the support.
  4. Support the caliper.
  5. Open the brake bleeder. Press the caliper piston into the bore.

Having trouble changing front brakes need some help


w/tire off insert strt screw driver into middle hole on caliper pry back towards you this will retract caliper, in rear of caliper 2 bolts pull those bolts remove caliper @ install new pads,, NO BLEED BRAKE REPLACEMENT, make sure to apply anti squeal lube to brake pads..pump brakes up after installation before driving!!! hope this helps!!!!!

I've had the rotors and pads replaced on my 2006 Toyota Tacoma Pre-runner and the front brades brakes still squeal when braking lightly. I have switched to the premium pads and rotors. What else can be...


Are the leading edges on the brake pads bevelled at an angle or are they flat on the brake rotors? There seems to be a problem with Japanese brake rotors (something about the harmonics) and they will sometimes squeal (even with new brake rotors and pads) if the leading edges on the brake pads are not bevelled at an angle. Most of the auto repair shops that I have worked at will only install bevelled edge brake pads on foreign vehicles, especially if they are Japanese imports. If the brake pads do have the edges bevelled then most likely dust has found its way between the brake pad and the brake rotor, and brake dust contamination is the #1 reason for a brake squeal come-back, and that is why a good repair facility will always clean the entire brake assembly including the backing plate for the brake rotor. Also, the brake caliper guides should be able to slide freely in and out of the brake caliper but they should not be sloppy either, and the brake caliper guides should be lubricated with a synthetic brake caliper grease only. The caliper guides should be able to slide freely in the brake caliper and if they do not the brake will not properly release.

If the brake calipers have phenolic (plastic) brake pistons then get rid of them for brake calipers with metal brake pistons.

Replace rear brake pads


Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components

Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

How do I replace the brakes on a 1995 sc400.


  1. Remove wheel.
  2. Remove the bottom caliper bolt, and turn caliper up
  3. Remove following parts:
    1. Two anti-squeal springs.
    2. Two brake pads.
    3. Four anti-squeal shims.
    4. Two pad wear indicators.
    5. Four pad support plates.
  1. Install new pad support plates.
  2. Install pads as follows:
    1. Install wear indicators on pads.
    2. Apply disc brake grease to both anti-squeal shim. Then install shims on each pad.
    3. Install pads with wear indicators facing downward.
    4. Install anti-squeal springs.
  1. Remove small amount of brake fluid from reservoir.
  2. Place a wooden plate on pistons, and press pistons in with hammer handle or equivalent.
  3. Install calipers and bolts. Tighten to specifications.
  4. Ensure brake fluid is at Max line.

I need to change my front brake pads on toyota aygo but cant find a work shop maneul


Dear Sir,

If you have the knowledge of automobile engineering you can do this easily.
Changing the brake pads is an easy job. The following set of
instructions look intimidating, but are actually very straightforward.
Most dealers will charge US$100 to $200 to do this job, but the
parts cost about US$25 and can be replaced in under an hour.
Jack up front wheel. Remove wheel. Remove small bolt holding the
flexible brake line bracket on the strut tower. Looking at the caliper
assembly, there are two long sliding pins that the caliper slides back
and forth on. Each has a hex head on the back (away from you) side.
There is a place on the pin that you can fit a wrench and hold it while
you loosen the hex head bolt. Remove the bottom hex head bolt ONLY.
The caliper will now flip up off the rotor, rotating on the upper pin. Use
a piece of string to tie it in the raised position while you work. Make a
note of how the pads are installed. Look at the wear indicator on the
inside pad in particular. Now carefully remove the pads, the anti-squeal
shims and pad support plates (the little clip-like things at the top and
bottom on each pad), noting the way they are installed and their
sequence. The pad support plates may be stuck to the calipers with
grime and crud. Gently pry them out. Clean any crud from the caliper in
the area where the pad support plates go. Clean up the pad support
plates. Reinstall the pad support plates in the same positions that they
were removed from.

You are not supposed to reuse the anti-squeal shims (the two thin plateson the side of the pads) but I always do if they aren't damaged and I never have a squealing problem. If your pads come with new ones, use'em. Otherwise, use the old or get new ones from your Toyota dealer.

Sparingly apply disc brake grease (I use Never-Seize or equivalent)
to both sides of all of the anti-squeal shims. Install the anti-squeal
shims, just as they were removed from the old pads, to the new pads.
Install the inner pad into the pad support plates with the wear indicator
facing up. Install the outer pad. Remove a small amount of brake fluid
from the reservoir under the hood. Using a wooden hammer handle or
other suitable non-marring tool, press in the caliper piston all the way.
If the piston is difficult to push back in, you can open the bleeder plug
on the caliper slightly and allow some fluid to escape while pushing it
in. Untie the caliper and swing it back down over the rotor. Hold the
pin with a wrench again and install the hex bolt and torque it to 20
ft/lb. Install the flexible brake line bracket and torque the bolt to 25
ft/lb. Repeat on the other wheel. Bleed all brakes starting with the
farthest from the master cylinder (right rear) and working to the
closest (left front). Fill the brake fluid reservoir to the full line.
