I just purchased a 2003 M3 and the convertible top does not seem to be operational. The pictures from the dealer show it down, but they are closed for the evening. I push the button to lower the roof and a yellow light appears?

Hi,

Open the boot / trunk. There is a part where the roof is stored when it is down, that can be raised to create more trunk / boot space when the roof is up. Grab the handle and make sure it is fully pulled to the back to make sure that the roof can be stowed correctly. If this is not fully back, or there is something pressing against it in the boot, the roof will not operate. The trunk needs to be closed before operating the roof too.

Not real sure on bmw but did you try lowering rear windows first

  • u12bfit Nov 03, 2010

    I did lower the windows and held the brake among other things. i have been reading on the forums and found that it may be a fuse near the battery. Or someone may have pulled the motor release to the roof under the back bench seat. I will try those two things. I hope that one of these is the solution.
    Thanks

HEY GUYS MY 97 328I CONVERTIBLE WONT OPEN OR CLOSE THE TOP, AS RIGHT NOW IT IS IN CLOSE POSSITION BUT THE LIGHT KEEP ON BLINKING, i DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO ANY MORE COULD ANY BODY HELP ME?

Turn on the radio so the battery is engaged, or turn on the engine.

  • 2 Fold down the cargo partition in the trunk and lock it on both sides. If the cargo partition is not down, there will be no place in the trunk to store the convertible top.
  • 3 Press the convertible button forward to open the top. It's located under the circular control button on the consul. The button has a picture of a window with one arrow pointing up and another pointing down.
  • 4 Pull the convertible button backward to close the top.
  • 5 Use your key to open or close the top when you are outside of the BMW but still close to it. Press and hold the arrow button on top of your key to open the top. To close the top, press and hold the Lock button. The car does not need to be turned on to operate the top with the key.

    The electric wings will not drop when letting the top down.

    I have the same problem with my car. I just bought a 2004 VW Beetle and have never owned a convetible before. So when I saw the wings I asked if this was normal. The mechanic at the dealer said that on the 04 those wings do not retract when the top is down, only when the top is closed. Now my car will beep when I start driving because the top is not down all the way, also the indicator light shows a blinking car in the temp display letting me know the top in not down all the way. I read a solution from someone else and it said to keep keep the button to open the top pressed or pulled.......whichever is the way to open it...until the motor stops, but that did not work. So I decided to do a little research online and saw pictures of 2004 convertible VW beetles with the top down....low and behold the wings were retracted when the top was down. So the mechanic at the dealer lied. If these people do not know what their cars do and don't do, they should not be working there. They are compltley neglagant and incompitent. If anyone has an ansewr for me, it would be appreciated.

    Z3 Convertible top - seems to be a common problem

    In general, without any testing or diagnosis, you could be dealing with any of the following:

    * Open relay - Located at the pump unit
    * Close relay - Located at the pump unit
    * End position micro-switch
    * The operating switch itself
    * An issue with the pump unit, but I doubt this, due to the intermittent nature. However, do check the hydraulic fluid level.

    The windows do not have to be down for the system to run.

    The brake pedal must be pressed while operating the switch. There is a switch at the pedal that signals the convertible top system, but if your brake lights are functioning, the brake switch will not be at fault.

    The system is pretty simple and some quick electrical tests should locate the faulty item.

    The Bentley repair manual for the Z3 has all of the electrical wiring diagrams, for use in the diagnostics. You can purchase this at Bavarian Autosport 800-535-2002.

    Convertible top will not close /open

    I have had this problem with my 2005 S4 Cab - sometimes the top will not latch. I have found that this was because the fabric near the rear passenger window was not folding into place over the steel structure. I just back up the top and made sure the fabric unfolded and all was well.
