Question about 1991 Honda Accord

3 Answers

I have a 1991 Honda Accord. Sometimes I have problems starting it and sometimes it fires right up. I stopped by a shop and they suggested fuel injector cleaner. That seemed to work for a while but now the battery runs down before I can get it to start. It turns over and just stops. I had to get two jumps today. I had the battery tested and was told it was fine. He suggested it may be my starter ????

How do you fix what you suggested the problem might be ?

  • lisaraemurph Nov 03, 2010

The car tries to start until the battery runs down...it sounds like its out of gas most of the time. By the third try it will usually start

So when I take it to the shop , what should I ask them to do ? Check the charging system or see if gas id getting to the injectors or both ? Roughly what do you think it should cost me ? I hate taking a car to the shop ! Thanks

The engine will turn over but not start? It sounds like you're having a problem with your main relay. It's a common problem in older Honda's. I had a 91 civic that had the same problem and I often encountered other Honda owners who had that problem too. This is most commonly caused by a malfunctioning main relay; it's a $50.00 part and is located under the dashboard, left of the steering wheel.

Also, make sure your battery terminals are clean, Honda uses copper terminals that corode quite easily.

Hope helps.

Hi If the battery is dying on you then is a charging issue. Check first your alternator if it is charging the battery.

A fully charged battery should read about 12.6 volts. If the battery reads 12.4 volts or less, it is low (discharged) and needs to be recharged.

Battery Voltage and State of Charge:

12.68v . . . . . . . . . . 100%
12.45v . . . . . . . . . . 75%
12.24v . . . . . . . . . . 50%
12.06v . . . . . . . . . . 25%
11.89v . . . . . . . . . . 0%

You can also check the charging system by connecting the leads of a voltmeter to the battery. When the engine starts, the charging voltage should jump to about 14.5 or higher. If the reading doesn't change or rises less than a volt, then the charging system has some problem.

Starter is just a part of the charging system , we cannot blindly say that starter is faulty.

91 honda accord won't start sometimes-battery, a/c, starter?

Your tempermental starting problem could be the park neutral safety switch . They get worn inside an cause this type problem . Next time it won't start place gear selector into neutral an see if it starts then . The cooling running problem is probably the cooling fan timer module . From the diagram it's hard to say which side the A/C condenser fan is on. The A/C fan has blue with yellow stripe wire in the connector along with a black one . I would also suggest you have a qualified repair shop do a voltage drop test on the starting circuit .
How to voltage drop test starter motor circuit

Starter Voltage Drop These test's will find any starting circuit problem .

My 1991 honda accord turnover but will not start sometimes, then a lot of the times it will start and shut right off, other times it will start and run fine . what can be causing this problem?

IT SOUNDS LIKE FUEL INJECTORS. OR FUEL PUMP. START WITH REPLACING A 8 DOLLAR PART. THE FUEL FILTER. IF IT DOES IT AGIAN AFTER THAT. CHECK YOUR FUEL INJECTOR RAIL. IT HAS A FUEL PRESURE VALVE ON IT. PUSH IT IN. IF GAS DOES NOT COME OUT. THEN ITS YOUR FUEL PUMP. IF IT DOES COME OUT. THEN ITS YOUR FUEL INJECTORS. JAKE.B

I have a 1991 accord. The distributor is getting power. We have changed the button and cap. Plugs and wires changed. ECU changed. It will crank, not start. What else could be the problem?

if i remember right there are two sensors in the dist. sometimes they go bad and will not allow the plugs to fire. its easier to replace the dist. then to replace the sensors. you can get one for a junk yard for cheap. thats what i whould try if it has on fire.

1993 honda accord won't start sometimes

Its not your fuel pump! Its the cracks on the soldering inside the main relay.
