SOURCE: Got error codes P0440, P0440 (pd), and P0442 which

It is probably a sensor that goes by the gas tank. I belive it is called a Fuel Vent Sensor Circuit. That should fix the problem.

Why is engine light on ?

The 506, 171, and 1582 codes could be due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. Use throttle body cleaner to remove the carbon build up and retset codes. The 0440 code is the evap system code. This is usually a loose or worn out fuel cap.

P0440 parts

Evap system leak. Usually a bad gas cap, replace with an OEM part, not the cheap ones at the parts store. Also remove any rust, debris or varnish from filler neck where the gas cap screws onto with fine steel wool, be careful not to scratch it up or get stuff into the neck. Otherwise, there is a leak in the evap (fuel reclaiming unit), check all gas tank and evap system hoses for leaks or cracks.

What is code p0440

EVAP Emission Control System Malfunction.
A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
The gas cap is not installed or working properly The purge solenoid has failed The canister is plugged and not working properly Possible Solutions With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid Check and/or replace the sensor Check and/or replace the purge valve Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

1998 Buick Park Ave with trouble code p0440

Trouble code p0440 may be a simple as an improperly replaced gas cap, or a crack in one of the evap hoses.
Have the code cleared, if it comes back, find a shop that will do a "smoke test" to find the bad evap hose, and have it replaced.
