Question about 1984 Dodge D150

2 Answers

Put new (rebuilt) starter on last weekend, this weekend drove it for 3 hours, parked it, 4 hours later went out to go somewhere and not even a click, battery is good, headlights are on, battery cables are fine, replaced starter relay, I'm at loss, unless the solenoid on the starter is bad.

Bummer. Sometimes rebuilt starters are not actually rebuilt, but repaired. this means they fixed the issue, but did not replace bushings, brushes, etc...

try hooking up a wire to the actuater terminal of the starter (usually the small one at 2 o'clock position) and connect test light to it an ground the test light. Run this wire inside the cab so you can see it...When you turn to start, this light should light. Run vehicle until problem happens again and if the light illuminates, the focus is the starter, if it does not, you need to look at the entire circuit. Look carefully at neutral safety switch and connections..

Try tapping on the starter with a plastic hammer to see if it will come back to life. I have seen new starters and rebuilt starters not spring to life when bench tested. Tap on it, take it out and bench test it, if it simply will not work , grab your receipt and take it back where you got it and exchange it for a starter that does work properly.

Sounds like the starter need to be replace or rebuilt.
The clicking is due to the starter still partially engaged. Grooves are worn on the contactors and the plunger is sticking in the starter.

Camaro wont turn over

First, clean your battery cables with a wire brush so you know you have a good connection from your battery. If that doesn't do it, it's most likely your starter or selenoid.

All the classic symptoms of a bad starter. A bad starter will work fine when cold but once it heats up, will require more power to work. Shame on the dealer for not recognizing this! A new battery with a full charge will work for a little while but if its the starter, I'm sure the problem will return Have your charging system checked out (most places will do this free of charge) Assuming the charging system checks out ok, I'd have the starter checked. I hope this solution provided you with the information you were looking for. Best of luck!

Hi Mike
Try lightly tapping the starter with a spanner and at the same time turning the key to start, if it starts you need the starter overhauled.

New starter or Manual Positioning lever shifter?

you might have the shift lever a little loose and it isn't moving all the way into park. Look up under the dash and find the first joint that the lever is attached too and tighten up any loose bolts.
