I don't know, If it cold out it will still start, here more facts

The engine is a 3.1 multiport

79,000 miles, the cars probley sat for a while (was a esate car)

there is no pattern,it can sit for a day or two and start and idle fine, drive it to the store and come out and boom, and I get a earfull

The main issue is not idling on start up

You can drive the car to work, fine, come out 8-10 hrs later and it may or may not idle at start.

For me I just run the car up past 2000rpm and hold for a bit and ease it back down and I'm good to go.

This does not work for her, I'm not there when it happens to her so I don't know ifshe does as I do.

where is the THERMISTOR located and how is it tested?

I will drive the car tonightand seewhat it does

Hi,
You need to get the thermistor checked, this is what controls the cold idle up, when it is cold the computers is told to turn the idle up and give the engine more gas. If this sensor is faulty you can and will have cold start problems, its ok when its hot but when its cold....it will play up. Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
Jason

Your car is equipped with a computer controlled engine management system. Try to visit any independent auto service and could scan your computer for fault or error codes. The information should pinpoint the malfunctioning components.

If a major tune-up has not been done recently, this could be the cause of your problem. Replace the spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters, etc. Also, replace the oxygen sensor. In addition, service the fuel injection system. Clean the carbon deposits from the throttle bore and idle passages.

Also, you should check to see if the throttle cable and throttle body are adjusted properly, check for vacuum leaks and verify the idle valve is working properly.

Keep us updated.

Hi! I strongly suggest that you have the computer looked at. If the computer is faulty the car will not response in anyway. Have it replaced and you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

You may have a problem with the throttle positioning sensor. It could be a few other things. I would take the car to Autozone and have them put it on their diagnostic machine and tell you what the codes are. It could be the mass air flow sensor, the crank sensor, the cam sensor. Could be a lot of reasons. But the diagnostics is free and will get you headed in the right direction to get the problem resolved.

I have a 2000 Plymouth with a 3.0L Motor. It started making a ticking noise while I was driving to my dads, about five miles out it completely shut down. It would turn over but not start. I checked...

It may very well be timing belt, and that is not an interference engine, so no valves should have been damaged. With only 79,000 miles I would certainly not scrap the engine because of that, if it is determined the timing belt is the cause. I'd think real hard about getting it to an experienced mechanic, if they can't give you more information than that by now.

May just be bad fuel If it has sat for that long. your fuel can be restored with an additive you can get from any auto parts store.I would try that first to rule that out.
