Backfiring I have a freshly built chevy 350 1978 that runs but if you rev it a couple of times it will backfire through the carb and at an idle it pops out the exhaust.Could it be a couple teeth off on the timing chain?

It has plug wires crossed the firing orders is 18436572 make sure distributor is pointing toward # 1 plug wire make sure #1 cylinder is up on compression take plug out put finger over plug hole let some one crank it over until compression comes up then line your rotor button is pointing toward #1 wire on cap. then start ur #1 plug wire where the rotor button is pointing and go clock wise 18436572 and that should take care of it

No. If you knocked pieces of the chain or sprockets off, you'd not run at all. Check your timing and your idle mix. Also, check to see if your crankcase vent valve is moving freely. Replace if in doubt. Sounds like you may be running rich. Check carb for proper idle mix after you set float levels. Is the carb new, rebuilt or some old hunk? Are the gaskets new or reused? Is the spacer plate the right one for the car and installed correctly?

Also...was the timing chain new and the cam properly indexed? You may have to take the front of the engine apart to find out.

I have a390 ford engine that back fires while idling it has a breaker point ignition what could be wrong

Check this video for idle speed adjustment. Backfiring can be caused by incorrect mixing in the carburettor or bad timing settings.

Why does my vintage beetle backfire on hi revs

Hello Kyle. On High Revs when having backfire you might have more rich mixture ( more fuel into air ) going through the carb ventury. check the spark plugs and their gap. Also if you do have contact points check for the correct gap. Also by using a timing light check you the timing if is in advance timing.

1977 360 replaced timing belt and am having trouble getting the distrubter set correctly any tips or web sites on this problem Will run but backfires out of carb,

You need a timing light. They are fairly cheap and there are a couple different types. It's backfiring out of the carb because one of the cylinder's is getting spark before the intake valve is closed. As long as you didn't move anything you should be one timing light away from finished.

88 Toyota Corolla backfires through carburetor.

If that is carbureted, and has a mechanical fuel pump, try running a length of fuel line from inlet side of pump to a gas can that has fresh, clean fuel, and if it runs good that way, you know problem is most likely in the tank. Removing the tank & cleaning it out is best solution from there. I'd even be tempted to add a small bottle or 2 of Lucas Fuel Sytem Cleaner to first fill in clean tank, just to help clean lines as well as carb.
