Backfiring

No. If you knocked pieces of the chain or sprockets off, you'd not run at all. Check your timing and your idle mix. Also, check to see if your crankcase vent valve is moving freely. Replace if in doubt. Sounds like you may be running rich. Check carb for proper idle mix after you set float levels. Is the carb new, rebuilt or some old hunk? Are the gaskets new or reused? Is the spacer plate the right one for the car and installed correctly?

Also...was the timing chain new and the cam properly indexed? You may have to take the front of the engine apart to find out.

it has plug wires crossed the firing orders is 18436572 make sure distributor is pointing toward # 1 plug wire make sure #1 cylinder is up on compression take plug out put finger over plug hole let some one crank it over until compression comes up then line your rotor button is pointing toward #1 wire on cap. then start ur #1 plug wire where the rotor button is pointing and go clock wise 18436572 and that should take care of it

i have this problem, i took off all my sparkplug wires and now i cannot get to run right, followed the manual but it is not working, also i dont see a indicator on the distributor cap numbering the firing order, i am completely lost here, pleas help
