I am mechaniclly handy and money is an issue. I recently changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, and spark plugs myself. Where do I go from here?

You go to the dealer. This code is for a Electronic Throttle Control Monitor Level 2/3 Torque Calculation Error. Could be firmware, could be hardware.

SOURCE: Trying to locate the oil filter in my 2004 mini cooper

The oil filter is on the right rear corner of the engine as you look at it from the front of the car. It is an aluminum cap with a 36mm nut on the top.

SOURCE: MIni Cooper S Head Gaskets Issues

the "sniffer" in this case is a device to detect the presents of combustion gasses in the water or radiator .... if there is a good head gasket seal then there should be no combustion gas in the water .... if there is even a small leak then the high pressure gasses will be forced into the water .. the opposite is true when you turn off the engine ... as it cools, pressure in the radiator can force water thru the leak back into the engine .... this also happens during the intake stroke .. so you would be losing water that you might see or smell come out the tail pipe ...the fact that the failure has happened a second time might indicate that you had a warped head or block .. or perhaps a micro crack or surface flaw.. those things should have been checked when the last repairs were done ... i am wondering if the repair shop might negotiate a reduced rate for the redo ... often heads are slightly machined to remove any warp or surface faults during such repairs (if any problems are suspected) ... a used replacement engine could have the same problem or worse .. so if yours is otherwise in good shape then it might be worth while to give it another go ,.. sounds like a good garage, hopefully they will cooperate ... and they might be interested in finding out themselves what happened ...

SOURCE: Mini Cooper P1689 code

P1689 - No communication between ECM & Injection Pump Module. This is why it's a hard start and the peddle isn't acting like it should. There's a problem where the (Computer) ECM, isn't making contact with the Injection Pump module. So the computer doesn't know what the pump is doing or sending. Could be a cut in the wires, corrosion, etc.. So many things it could be, fuel pressure is low.

probably want to do a compression test, you may have a valve that's screwing up. Also take a look at your coil, # 3 tends to rust and get really weak.

Hard to get in gear whining noise when clutch peddle is depressed. and where to put clutch fluid.

Get it to a garage - if the clutch has worn out - 9 years old and its quite possible - you don't want to have to have a new gearbox as well.

Cars cost!!

GOOD LUCK
