Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

I have a 1998 Dodge Caravan and today when I got home, I noticed that the cooling fan would not turn off. I drove it 10 miles and the engine was not hot upon returning. Any ideas what the problem might be? How do I get it to turn off (afraid the battery will drain overnight)?

The only way to protect the battery, is by disconnecting the positive harness from the (+) terminal of the battery. If you want to stop the cooling fan, then unplug the wires from the connector, but the car will owerheat in idling. Might be a bad temperature sensor or something else. If the service engine soon is on, then decode it, find the code explanation and find a way to fix the problem. This car has to be inspected in a mechanical shop, befor the battery is lost.

Could be different problems.
The cluster issue could be a problem in the printed circuit board inside the cluster.
The cooling fan problem could be low coolant, a blown fuse, a faulty temp sensor, fan motor, or relay.

I noticed two days ago that the a/c cooling system was not cooling as it should. Drove it for a short time yesterday - same experience. Today after driving about 10 minutes in stop and go traffic -...

Sounds as if the electric fan on the radiator isn't coming on. Most radiator shops also work with A/C systems and may be more qualified to do the work. However, any good "normal" repair shop should also be able to diagnose the problem. Try not to drive it very far and keep close watch on the engine temperature. An overheat can do extensive (expensive) engine damage. If you have a fill cap on the radiator, fill it there (when cooled down) filling the recovery bottle may not be sufficient to get coolant into the engine.

98 dodge caravan overheating...heater works..checked fans they came on later but when I drove it after it cooled down and it overheated...check engine lite came on.

About the only things are the thermostat and the water pump. There could be something with the radiator but that is the rarest because the water shoots straight through. If it overheats fairly rapid,it's most likely the thermostat.Sometimes a water pump will let you go 20-30 miles before overheat. The thermostat is cheaper and easier if you're going to try it systematically.Overheat will probably cause the check engine light too.Good luck! SOUND LIKE COOLANT FAN NOT COMING ON.WHEN YOU ARE IN CITY.YOUR ENGINE RADIATOR NOT GETTING MUCH AIR FLOW IN THE CITY.BECAUSE YOU STOP AND GO ALOT.DUE TO A LOT OF STOP LIGHTS.CHECK COOLANT FAN RELAY AND FUSE.IF BOTH GOOD.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR SENSOR.IF ALL IS GOOD HOT WIRE COOLANT FAN TO SEE IF IT RUNS.IF NO FAN MOTOR BAD.IF YES FAN MOTOR RUNS WIRE CONNECTOR IS OPEN OR DAMAGED.

Tranmission problem on 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan

When the trans. sticks itself in 2nd gear and stays there is because it's detecting a trans. problem and puts itself in "limp in" mode. When it happens again, to somewhere to have a scan done on the trans. so you can find out which sensor on the trans. is acting up.
