Has something to do with the security system-wont start, battery ok???

  • Starr_cooper Aug 28, 2008

Same thing has happened to me. I replaced the starter and it still doesnt start. My husband say it is may be the ignition switch. I am totally confused.

The car suddenly wouldn't start. Tried jumping then replacing battery. Accessories work and radio will come on but, engine will not turn over. Tapped starter with a hammer...the car started to crank but again would not start. In accessory mode after most lights go out the oil, battery, and service engine soon light stay on. Help!!

my car does not start and the lights all work it just wont turn over

My daughters car security system does the same thing. At first we were pretty panicked about it, changing the battery, etc., but now that we know what it is she just resets the security system and moves on. The car goes along for 1-2 months and then she has to do it again. She has a 2004 Grand Am. Would it be worth checking to see about replacing the security system?

My car will do the same thing (not starting, lights are on, etc).. my security light however, does not come on or flash, would resetting the passlock fix this?

My 2004 Grand Am won't turn over. I turn the key and it starts to crank but will not completely turn over then it will die. The only way to get it to turn over is to press on the gas? Any ideas?

Per the 'remedy' below - it does work. It has happened to my 2004 Grand AM , many, many times. I have linked it to unlocking and locking it w/the remote keypad device. The problem I have now, is that the 'security' light on the dashboard won't turn off. I've also noticed that when my lights are on (or theradio) there is a clicking, rice krispies snapping sound around the drivers side of the dashboard. Any help out there?

It was the security Passlock system on my car as well. I did't notice that the security light had come on the first time. Look up Passlock in the owners manual.

    1. You can reset it yourself for free by turning the key to accessory position
    2. Leave for ten minutes on accessory mode.
    3. Turn car off completely
    4. Try to restart

This fixed my problem on my own after I paid to have it fixed and it happened again the next day.

My 2004 pontiac grand am did the same thing, but it was not the passlock. My security light did not flash. My alternator, starter, and battery were all good. There is a starter relay under the hood that went bad. I replaced the relay and car started right up. ($17.00 fix). You can check the starter relay by switching it with the cooling fan #1 relay. (Starter relay is relay #11, cooling fan relay is #12, they are the exact same relay). My car is 2004 pontiac grand am se, v-6, so I'm not sure if this helps you or not.. but it's atleast somewhere to start...

2012 dodge charger won't start but makes a clicking noise under the dash .

Turn on your headlights and some other electrical accessories. Go check the headlights and see if they are dim. If so, you battery has low charge and will not allow the car to fully engage the starter. If after checking the battery, you have to determine whether the low battery is due to a bad battery or the alternator. To do this, check the voltage on the battery with the key out of ignition and everything off in the car. The voltage should be roughly 12.7 on a new battery however yours may be significantly lower. If you can start the car after with jump, then check the battery voltage with the engine running. It should come up to around 14 V but no more than 15 V. If the voltage increases, that means your alternator is fine but it is likely that your battery is either bad or you have some parasitic draw in the electrical system. Hope this helps.

My 2006 chevy trailblazer 2wd 6cyl wont start. makes clicking noise, then nothing lights/radio etc work but wont start what is it

You got a jump and it ran fine? It's your battery. The lights and radio are much easier for a battery to handle than spinning a car engine. Again, if all you needed was a jump, you have a bad battery.

My 2004 430 Lexus ran fine yesterday, but did not start this morning. minor clicking noise. New Battery???

Hello! Clicking noise is always dead battery. Get a jump, remove the +Positive cable while car running. If it shuts off then it is the alternator. If it runs smoothly it is the battery. If it runs rough look at the voltage regulator or wire connector integrity.

My 89 acura legend will not start it makes no noise when i try to start it it doesnt make any sound when i try to start it i checked all my fuses there all fine i pulled out my starter and had it checked...

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

I strongly suggest that you check or replace the positive cable going to the starter. It can be broken inside that's why there's no current going to the starter. I believe you'll be good after.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Check the battery first, if it is ok you probably have a bad starter. If the battery is drained, you need to charge and test the battery and alternator.
