SUV has stalled multiple times while driving. Most recently while on the highway doing 110 km/hr. Doesn't seem to matter if it is cold or up to running temp. After the vie hole stalls I usually have a small issue getting it to start again. The only thing that seems to affect the vehicle is the amount of fuel in the tank. If the vehicle is full no issue. 3/4 of a tank and less it becomes very unreliable. Just recently the check engine light has come on when the fuel gets to about 3/4 of a tank as well but as soon as the tank is filled the check engine light goes out. I suspect fuel filter or fuel pump. Am I correct in this assumption?

I would replace your fuel filter. It is cheap and should be easy to replace if I was going to guess. A clogged fuel filter will cause poor fuel flow and can cause stalling. If that doesn't help I would get to a repair shop because cars are difficult to diagnose without a computer nowadays

2002 Malibu stalls while driving, doesn't over heat. But can start smelling gas fumes before it stalls. usually wait about 5 mins then restarts. in higher elevation runs fine but in lower elevatio

It sounds like the catalytic converter could possibly be almost completely plugged up not allowing the exhaust to leave the engine like it should. It just builds up in the cylinder head and when it gets too much in it built up and there's no where to go, it'll stall the engine. By letting it sit for a few minutes, it gives the exhaust time to find a way out and the car will restart.

Sounds like your coil is going out. when they get hot they will go out and when they cool back down they will work normally again. If you replace the coil you will be good to go. Thanks for using FixYa and good luck!

The problem is your crank shaft position sensor. It is usually behind the harmonic balancer.

Engine stalls, check engine light, not fuel filter.

the white smoke as it stalls could be steam in the exhaust. This is caused by coolant leaking into cylinders from a leaking head gasket. You should check cylinder compression next with a compression tester.
