Hello sir,

There are three possible reasons why your timing chain is making the rattling noise.
1. Oil pressure is low: The tensioners that keep the timing chain tight are operated by oil pressure so if your oil pressure is low then the tensioner will not be working properly hence your chain will flap around and hit the guides.
2. Tensioner is stuck: If you have alot of oil gunk on your tensioner then the tensioner will be stuck and not extend out all the way to keep the timing chain tight.
3. Tensioner is broken: If your tensioner is mechanically broken then you need to replace it.
Having said that, before you follow this write-up it is a good idea to check your oil pressure. Also, in this write up I will not go over how to replace the tensioner but rather tell you how to clean it while it's still installed.

it may just be something vibrating-inspect for loose bolts or components-----internal problems could be many things from bearings--valves--cams--timing chains......to tranny or engine mount----a stethascope can be used to pinpoint-----------try to get an olschool mech to hear-----also salvage yards are experienced

Does the 2000 silverado v8 have a timing chain and if so at what milage should it be replaced

yes the silverado's have timing chains, just about all v6's and v8's have timing chains, and timing chains should not be serviced, unless you are having problems with a timing chain guide or timing chain tensioner

Eninge knock with a known cam gear problems.

i had the same problem. had a knocking on the engine and let the vehicle sit until i had time to look for the problem. my unknowing mom took the car without permission and the car broke down on her. as it would turn out the upper timing guide rail broke off and damaged the cam gears and broke the upper timing chain along with damaging both the right and left lower chain guides, and the tensioner was also damaged. i would recommend that u inspect the lower chain to make sure that everything is good.

My 88 wrangler runs out of power to get up a hill

Got a 4.0 in there? I'll bet the timing chain has streched. At about 160K, the strech on the chain causes the distributor (cam sensor) to be "out of phase" with the crank sensor, effectively messing just enough with the engine ignition timing, to give you these symptoms. On older vehicles, you could simply adjust the base timing by turning the distributor. Yours is locked in one position, therefore you can't do that. I don't recommend you do this but there is a way to "cheat".
You need to remove the distributor and grind off the hold down tab so it is now able to turn past the hold-down bolt. Place a large flat washer under the bolt(with one edge ground down to conform to the distributor housing) The timing can then be changed. If you turn it about 1/4" CCW, you will note an immediate change in performance. Use a timing light to bring timing up to about 4 degrees advanced.(back off a bit if getting into knock on hills). This will buy you some time before changing chain. Remember though this is temporary and that the base problem needs to be dealt with!!!
