My 2004 Explorer, which I bought with 42000 miles on it 15 months ago and now only has 49000 miles, has a rough idle although it seems to drive fine (no miss that I can tell). Have changed the fuel and air filters and added lots of fuel injector cleaner. The local tech said he has seen the spark plug wires cause a problem. I have viewed them in the dark with the engine idling to see if any there is any external spark but do not notice any. Next step may be new plugs and wires.

2004 V8 with 49000 miles on it. Engine quietly dies when I set my cruise control to 40 or less. Starts right back up though. Changed fuel filter, though I knew that would not fix it. Not idling rough and drives well with good gas mileage (15 city and 20 highway). Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my 2004 explorer 4lt engine with 65,000 I bought it new and it did not seem to start until I ran E85 gas in it. I have changed plugs wires and filters with no help I am going next to use an injector cleaner to see if that helps. Other problems that I have encounter are load rear end roar at 50=60 mph and a gas gage that works sometimes. Fix on the gas gage seems to be too much sulfur in most gas and need to use Mobile gas which contains an additive to deal with this or add tectron to other gas seems to work but it is a permanent problem and the fix needs to be continued- fix was recommended by Ford mechanic but Ford denies the problem. Any suggestions on any of these issues would be great

My 04 Explorer has a rough idle but runs great. I have changed the spark plugs and wiring also the Idle Control Unit as well as the throttle body. They are colocated. Put high octane fuel in tank as well as fuel additives but still it has a rough idle. It feels like a vacuume leak or something. Don't know, but sure wish someone could give an answer. My next step is a complete diagnostic but I am getting the feeling it will show no problems. Can someone help on this problem. With as many people reporting the same problem, there has to be a reason. Thanks.

2004 explorer, 80k miles with sudden rough idle. replaced plugs, wires, cleaned mass air flow sensor and intake, replaced fuel filter and tried multiple cleaners through several fill-ups. no results with any attempt. i've been told that it could be the ignition coil pack, i need to do more research before spending $100 more.

Remove the IAC (Idle Air Controller (or Valve)) and either replace it or clean it with ether.

Have you replaced a fuel pump? I had to have my fuel pump replace, my fuel relay switch on the top of the pump, and my computer reset. Then this morning it started having problems again. Seem like the same issue I've already had worked on.

Hello Need help on a 2004 Ford Explorer. Having problems with Ford explorer rough ideal & missing. Changed plugs & wiring. Used Gas treatment. Change fuel filter & air filter also.

The computer should have coded a problem. If it did not code it is usually a vacuum or compression problem. With the motor running use a spray bottle of water and go along the seams of the intake manifold, Brake booster, EGR valve, and anything that has a vacuum line and spray them.

If you have a vacuum leak the water will be drawn in and the idle will be affected. That would be the gasket or part to replace. Sometimes on 4.6 SOHC engines the area under the Airhorn clogs the intake ports for the EGR. The groove under the gasket needs a cleaning.

Autozone and Oreillys will scan your Ford free. There may be a problem with the diagnostic system in your vehicle and at least you would be informed.

1997 ford explorer 4.0 still runs rough after changing plugs and wires and coil pack..what else could make it run rough?

It could be many other things. Have you changed the air filter? I could be extremely dirty or it could even be a vacuum leak that is making it run rough. Is there a check engine light on? If so that could help find the problem. If it's not something that simple you would need to start looking to see if all cylinders have the correct compression because it could be a blown head gasket or some other internal engine problems. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!

You have an air leak at the intake. Spray a bit of starting fluid around the intake. The engine will respond when you hit the spot. Replace the gaskets as required.

2005 Ford Explorer cylinder 5 misfire, I changed coil pack and spark plug, problem still exist.

Keep in mind the spark plug wires is what transfers the electricty from the coil to the spark plugs #5 is bad then it is not going to receve proper curent. So usaly it is ideal to change all at the same time!don't forget to disconect battery to reset computer takes a couple of minutes to reboot the computer.Merry Christmas
