Question about 1995 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

Turning signal makes grinding noise when turned on.

Hi I recently purchased a 1995 mercury sable it runs great but when I turn on my turning signals I get a funny sound. The sound will stop for brief moments and the signals will work and make the usual clicking sound but it only lasts for a second. The sound seems to be coming from below the dash near the fuse box. I found a small black box that seems to be making the noise and when I move it the noise will subside but my signals dont come on when I do this.

Check all wires running to battery. Check the battery ground(black) cable for sure. Make sure it is getting a good ground. If necessary unbolt the ground and clean up with a wire brush or wheel.

For 2000 Mercury Sable 3.0L EFI DOHC 6cyl the Flasher is located on front seating area, driver side, under dash, mounted in junction block.

Signals on mercury sable 2002

I think that it could be a short somewhere along the circuit. Your front turn indicators, your dash blinkers, and your rear turn indicators are all on one circuit. Maybe a wire rubbed on a piece of metal or got too hot and the plastic housing melted off. Electrical problems are nothing to toy with as they can lead to your car burning to the ground. I'd take it in so a technician can run some tests to determine if there is a short somewhere along the line.

Mercury Sable makes noise when turning left and backing in? It sounds like a grinding noise.

Sounds like a CV (Constant Velocity) joint. I can't completely solve this for you, but you can re-post with the CV problem. The sound - grinding and or popping - should be coming from only one side of the car - but it could be the inner or outer CV joint on that side. Check the rubber boots around the joints - they are located on each end of the drive shaft on the transaxle. If you have a torn boot, that will probably indicate which joint is bad.
