SOURCE: A4 steering lock does not engage and car won't turn over

The steering locks don't necessarily engage when the key is removed, I always turn the wheel before exiting to engage it. There are several positions that will allow the pin to lock in but if between these, it may seem that it isn't locked.

SOURCE: locked up steering wheel

Pull the steering wheel from left to right and then right to left, back and forth while trying to turn key, on occasion this works.

SOURCE: 2004 Santa Fe Ignition switch locked

I just had this happen to me yesterday with my 2002 Santa Fe. After trying everything (jiggling steeling wheel, shaking the car, you name it we tried it). We got a chain and pulled the car ahead about 2 feet. That didn't seem to do anything but we then pulled up the emergency brake into the lock position and tried to start the car (with the ER brake on) and it worked!!! The steering wheel came unlocked and the car started up. Don't know if it was the pulling of the car that broke something free or if it was the ER brake, but that was what worked for me.

Key ignition wont turn

APPLY BRAKE AND MAKE SURE STEERING WHEEL IS CENTERED. IF IT IS PARKED SO THERE IS PRESSURE ON THE FRONT WHEELS AND HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL HARD RIGHT OR LEFT IT WILL MAKE THE KEY VERY HARD TO TURN.

Ignition switch will not engage/turn to start car

Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck

Steering wheel not locking with key in lock position 1998 Dodge RAM 1500. How to correct?

some cars don't lock automatically when the key is in the lock position on the key barrel its self, you may have to remove the key and then try to turn wheel for lock to engage

Key wont come out of ignition

Hi. Chances are, the lock for the steering wheel is sticking, or broken. Try putting the steering wheel close to straight, then spray some PB Blaster in through the keyhole. Make sure to cover the area underneath with plastic or cloth. Then, lightly tap the head of the key with a hammer. After a few taps, move the steering wheel left to right to try and engage the lock.
If this does not help, then I suggest taking it to a shop, as the air bag will have to be removed to remove the steering wheel to fix the problem. Hope this helps....

Ignition wont turn far enough to engage the starter

Have you tried moving your steering wheel around? it may have locked, which will prevent you from turning your keys all the way until you move the steering wheel into the right position for the lock to disengage

2001 mb clk 320, my ignition switch will not turn. screen tells me to remove key, but tires wont lock when key is removed(steering columb wont lock).

Hi there
I had something similar on my merc
but yours sounds similar.
the fact that you say the steering lock no longer works is very worrying, most times the key not going past position 1 is due to the steering lock being actuated and the pressure in it has to be released before the key will turn, you will have to go from lock to lock the find where the steering lock actuates when this happens follow my wiggle method of turning the steering wheel slightly when the steering lock is on the disengage it. ie keep trying the key whilst wiggeling the steering wheel.
hope that helps

Key will not go into lock position - and I cant remove it on 2000 Bravada. The trans works fine.. the car starts fine.. I just cannot move the key to the lock position and remove it. Any help for this one?

Make sure the car is completely in park. I have had to wiggle the steering wheel to make sure it engages in the locked position before it will let me remove the key. For some reason, the ignition doesn't recognize the vehicle is in park.
