My 98 dodge ram starts off running fine but as it goes down the road it jumps and acts like its not getting gas. if i floor it it works for a bit but starts again. then when i came into the neighbor hood it backfired like crazy and did not go any where. i then dropped it into first and gave it gas and put it back in drive and it made it enough to get home.

If it isn't a fuel issue, then I would look at the timing, check that your timing hasn't jumped a teeth or two. Bring it to TDC and check all markings.
i think you might be right it sounds like your engine is getting over fed fuel you are probably not getting very good fuel mileage either the 3.8 and 5.0 would defintely require the same volume of fuel it is probably playing havoc on the pressure regulators i would get another fuel pump and start there
Pull your AIS motor off, clean with throttle body spray, especially pintle (pointed end) and hole it came out of , re-install & try again, see if that helps. If it works good for a while & acts up again, replace it.
it could be a number of things. check your ball joints. i had the same problem with my dodge, i replaced the ball joints and it stopped. your wheels could also need alignment.
