Mercury Sable 97 will not go from Park into Rev. Drive or any other gear You have to play around with it then it will move smoothly.What needs to be fixed,is it minor or major?

It sounds like the brake switch sensor not making good contact. That switch makes sure the driver has his or her foot on the brake before your able to pull the shifter ot of park

Be sure to check ALL fuses. Next check to see brake lights come on when brake pedal is press to check brake light switch. If this doesn't work you may have a mechanical problem inside shifter housing.
That is what it sounds like. I would check the transmission fluid level. I f it is full, you probably need a transmission. If it is low or out of fluid, then you need to find the leak, repair it, and cross your fingers and hope there is no permanent damage to the transmission.
That happen to me, and A guy helped me. The problem maybe down by the brake pedal, but above the brakes you may have pulled the wires a loose with your feet, or something and the wires need to be put back together maybe with black electrical tape. Definitley have to go down to the floor, and look under where the brake pedal is.
Brake Shift interlock system problem probably . This is a safety system that will not let you move the gear selector from park ,unless your foot is pressing on the brake pedal . Electrically controlled locking solenoid , wiring , brake switch used to control this .
Could be that your linkage is broken and just looks like it is shifting or a bad tranny module or tranny but i would look at the linkage and see if it is hooked up to the tranny.
