Injector "spider" is what they use on the central port injection. it is one injector with 6 exits instead of the usual one. kinda expensive..is it a no start situation. and did you have the fuel pressure checked w/ a gague ir just push in the schrader valve. because fuel comes out doesn't mean there is not enough pressure

1997 chevy blazer not starting when cold

If it starts and run with a little fuel down the throttle body than the very first thing I would do is check fuel pressure. It needs to be more than 56 psi and better yet closer to 60 psi in order for the poppet injectors to fire. If fuel pressure is one pound less than minimum the car will not start. The reason why it runs after it is started is the poppet injectors are now under vacuum which helps the poppet injectors overcome the lack of fuel pressure and they work. Posting a phone number and or calling you is against site policy. I will be more than happy to walk you through all the possibilities Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

1996 4.3 wont start. Turns over, Spark OK, fuel 55psi

Fuel pressure is a little low. Will it start with a couple shots of carb spray in the throttle body? If it does and continues to run than the fuel pump is not providing enough pressure to to open the mechanical poppet valves on the end of the injectors. minimum fuel pressure is 58 psi. One PSI below spec is enough to make it not start.

Also check to make sure there is spark at each cylinder. just because there is spark at the ignition coil does not mean it is getting the the spark plugs. you may have a bad cap or a rotor that is burned through.

i'm pretty sure you have a Central Port Injection setup on this engine. Which means the injectors are inside of the upper plenum and cannot be seen. This type of fuel injection system uses a centrally located electric fuel injector(s) which feed fuel to a mechanical poppet style injector which is routed directly above the intake valves for each cylinder.

The poppet valves require a minimum of 56 psi of fuel pressure. If you have 55 psi it will not start. It needs the fuel pressure to overcome the mechanical resistance of the poppet injectors. Fuel pressure should at least be 60 psi. It is very important to check fuel pressure with an accurate gauge.

If fuel pressure is low it will not start no matter what you do and a new fuel pump will likley fix the problem. Get a good quality pump such as an a/c deco or Dephi. Other brands may be cheaper but they will not last.

If fuel pressure checks out good let me know and I'll give you some more info.

97 jimmy runs when you pour gas into throttle body, fuel pumps is putting out 55 to 56 psi. but will not pickup the gas from the injectors, fuel manifold psi is 55 to 56psi. 1997 4.3 vortec engine

If the 8th letter of the VIN # is W which i bet it is than your fuel pressure is to low.

This engine uses a CPI unit to deliver fuel to the cylinders. The CPI unit consists of a central injector that feeds fuel to the poppet valve that are right above the intake valves. The poppet valves require high fuel pressure in order to open and deliver fuel to the cylinders at start up.

The reason why it starts and runs if you add a little gas through the throttle body is that once the vehicle is running the intake is under vacuum. The poppets can open with less fuel pressure in a vacuum. This is a real common scenario with these style injection systems.

A new good quality fuel pump (a/c delco or delphi are good pumps) and your fuel pressure should be back into spec of 58 psi or more and the vehicle should fire right up. Make sure you replace the fuel filter when you replace the pump.

How toreplace fuel injector chevy astro 1999

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to the fuel system relief procedure in this section.
  3. Remove engine cover.
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  5. Remove upper manifold assembly.
  6. Disconnect fuel meter body electrical connection and the fuel feed and return hoses from the engine fuel pipes.
  7. Remove poppet nozzle out of the casting socket by squeezing the nozzle locking tabs together.
  8. Remove fuel meter body by releasing the locktabs.
NOTE Each injector is calibrated. When replacing the fuel injectors, be sure to replace it with the correct injector.
  9. Remove lower hold-down plate and nuts.
  10. While pulling the poppet nozzle tube downward, push with a small prytool down between the injector terminals and remove the injectors.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the new injector O-ring seats with engine oil.
  2. Install o-rings on the injector.
  3. Install fuel injector into the fuel meter body injector socket.
  4. Install lower hold-down plate and nuts. Torque the nuts to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  5. Install fuel meter body assembly into the intake manifold. Torque the fuel meter bracket retainer bolts to 88 inch. lbs. (10 Nm).
CAUTION To reduce the risk of fire or injury ensure that the poppet nozzles are properly seated and locked in their casting sockets.
  6. Install fuel meter body into the bracket and lock all the tabs in place.
  7. Install poppet nozzles into the casting sockets.
  8. Engage electrical connections.
  9. Install new o-ring seals on the fuel return and feed hoses.

Misfire code, rough idle, full tune up complete, crank sensor replaced, intake replaced, injector test good, exhaust clear no codes other than misfire, trim lean once

The black soot on the plugs means that you are running extremely rich. The fuel injectors ma test good electricly, but they are notorious for leaks. The spider-looking thing sandwiched between the plastic intake plenum and the intake manifold gets cracks in it's "legs" and leaks fuel ito the plenum area. The fuel pressure regulator is also housed in this same assembly. if the diaphram in the regulator gets a pinhole in it, it also leaks fuel into the plenum area, causing all kinds of erratic idleing, black smoke from the exhaust, and will cause your fuel trims to drop into the negative 20s.

There is a technical service bulletin covering this subject. This procedure outlines the steps required to replace the existing Central SFI Fuel System with a new MFI (Multiport Flexible Injection) Fuel System.

It is removing the injectors which are all housed in the center body of the injector assembly and replacing them with a new version where the injectors are located where the ols "poppets" used to be in the intake manifold ports. The picture below is for a V-8 engine that is covered by the same TSB.052d4ba.gif
The poppets and the pressure regulator are available individually to fix your existing fuel injection system, but I gave up on that after replacing several poppets only to have them come back in a few months with another popet line broken. I recommend replacing the whole assembly with the new and improved version. My customers have told me after doing this that the engine never ran that smooth when it was new.

The GM part number for the new injector assembly for your V-6 engine is 12568332 it is also now available at several aftermarket parts outlets.

As for the timing chain solution posted by doodieman200, all I have to say is that I have enough fingers on one hand to count all of the failed timing chains I have replaced on these engines. If you don't have a cam/crank sync code, the timing chain has definitely not slipped a tooth.

95 Blazer Vortec starting problem.

Hello;
First you need to have your fuel system tested. It sounds as though the relay and pump have gone out. When you turn the ignition to on the pump should energize for 2 seconds and stop. The pump will deliver fuel after startup. Poor performing pump equals poor performing vehicle. With the vehicle not staying running when it did start, I would check the fuel pressure and then replace the pump. You can check the fuel pressure regulator by pulling off the vacuum line and see if you have fuel in the line. If you do the regulator is shot. The fuel pump relay also needs to be checked for operation especially if the fuel pump is not working. Also check your rollover valve to be sure it has not tripped.
Thanks;
Rich

1994 jimmy fuel shutown @spider?

Hi

A very common failure on these is the CPFI unit , or SPIDER as people like to call it.

There is one single injector which feeds each cylinder via a pipe and poppet. The injector becomes blocked and the engine won't start or run.

Before you go condemning this though, just make sure you have good fuel pressure because the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump could also have a hand in the problem. Make sure the pump is running, and if not then check the fuse, the relay, and the pump itself.

Very best regards

Geordie
