Key not turning

Van was parked and when we went to restart it the key would not turn. The steering wheel is not locked and I found that to be strange. It's almost like the ignition is siezed. Help?

All power is on. (Lights, Odometer, etc) The steering wheel will not locked. Acts like key is siezed, will not turn. Am able to take the key out.

The key can be removed and inserted into the ignition; but the key will not turn to start the car or use the accessories. The steering wheel can move freely. All power is on with lights working.

Just had the same thing happen to me with my 2001 T&C. As soon as I explained this to the tow truck driver that came to tow my vehicle to the shop, he chuckled and said "put the key in the ignition and then hit the key with the palm of your hand a couple of times." Apparently the tumblers just weren't lined up properly. He still suggested getting the ignition replaced, but at least now I know what to do. Hope this works for you.

Same thing happened to me ion my 2003 T&C. Even though I managed to turn the ignition on after perhaps 20 minutes of trying, I brought it into Chrysler. They replaced the key mechanism.
Not under warranty. About $300.
Typical Chrysler ****.

Thanks for the great "tow truck driver tip". It worked like a charm.
For sometime I periodically would not be able to turn the ignition until I move the steering wheel. Today, the ignition would not turn no matter what I tried. I was prepared to call a tow truck on Monday.

Ignition ley got locked. ket wont turn

I have an 2002 Escape. I can think of three possible issues:
You're using the wrong key. Duh.
You have a bad ignition switch. Extremely unlikely.
Your steering wheel is pushing against the steering lock. I just went out to my Escape to confirm this on mine. This happens sometimes if you park against a curb, or parking block. The steering wheel is pushed against the lock pin, and the key can not be turned.
Trying turning the sterring wheel back and forth. There should be some play or shake. If no play, turn the steering wheel a little harder in either direction until it moves a little, hold it, and try the key.

For the disbelievers, this can happen on most cars. Go to your car and hold some pressure on turning the steering wheel. Try turning your key from off to start.

Try rotating the steering wheel in both directions while applying rotational force on the key.

I have had this problem on a F150 where the person pulled in their driveway and proceeded to turn the car off but turned the wheel while the powersteering was still on, when the engine stopped the steering wheel rotated and locked from the force of the truck.

Hope this helps!

Can not turn the ignition key, to start car?

This is a very common situation that arises when the steering-lock mechanism binds, it is usually because the wheels are jammed against the curb.
Follow the instructions below to solve the issue:--
1) First of all make sure that the transmission is in park. Set the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling farther against the curb
2) Pull hard on the steering wheel while turning it in both directions. This will normally free the wheel, but if it does not help. then,
3) Release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. Let up on the foot pedal just enough to rock the car slightly.and now turn the steering wheel again. this time the key should turn now.
Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

I can't start the car!

Try turning the steering wheel a bit when using the key. The steering wheel lock puts pressure on the lock cylinder to keep the wheel locked. If this pressure is high, it can keep you from using the key.

While turning the key rotate the steering wheel left and right. If there is too much tension on the parking lock the key cannot be turned.

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel at the same time as you turn the key? Have you tried pushing on the gear shift lever, to make sure it's all the way in park?

Steering won't unlock so that we can start van

If the wheel is turned left or right try turning it in the same direction the wheels are turned, the steering wheel should move a little and should be able to turn the key while holding the wheel. May need to use some muscle to move the wheel depends on how it was parked.

A4 steering lock does not engage and car won't turn over

The steering locks don't necessarily engage when the key is removed, I always turn the wheel before exiting to engage it. There are several positions that will allow the pin to lock in but if between these, it may seem that it isn't locked.
