Broken Cylinder head valves

Hi there, my car's fan belt snapped and I replaced it with a new one. After driving for 5 km, cylinder head valves got broken. What could be the cause? Is there other setting i should do after changing a fan belt?

    What are the chances of car corrupting engine timing when the serpentine belt snaps? Do you think I should always check the timing belt and adjuster every time I change a serpentine belt?

    Does a VW Jetta MK 4 have a diesel pump? What happens when its timing is off? Does it have timing settings?... does it make the car sound badly if the timing is off? Do you need to set the timing on the diesel pump after installing a new serpentine belt?

Sounds like your timing belt may have slipped or snapped a ceased timing belt adjuster could cause this check your timing belt and adjuster and all belt adjustment pulleys before you fix the valves otherwise its bound to happen againalso make sure your engine oil is full

    well its possible if one of the adjustment pulleys are ceased it could just be a one off which caused the serpintine belt to break if the timing belt and adjuster is new then they will be fine for

    100 000km then replace as necessary the valves would have broken by hitting the top of the pistons in some cases this happens when your timing belt slips or snaps

I replaced the drive belt tensioner now the car wont start


Well firstly if your wife drove the car for 5 miles with the tensioner broken, then the belt being lose will have slipped a couple of teeth. Did you set the camshaft and crank alignment marks correctly before you fitted the new tensioner? If you did and it still won't start then that means that you have one or two bent valve's in the cylinder head.You will have to remove the cylinder head and replace those valves or that car will never start again.

My timing belt broke how do i tell if their is endgin damage


According to Gates chart, you engine is an 'interference engine' meaning that the valves and pistons can collide. The belt change interval is 60,000 miles/100,000 km.
I had an engine that could interfere but lucked out and no damage occurred which I established only be removing the cylinder head.
I would not install a new belt without pulling the head and inspecting for damage, otherwise even greater damage may occur if one or more valves are bent or have broken the valve stems. If the head is removed, make sure that it and the block are checked for flatness otherwise a replaced head gasket (must be done if head is removed) may fail prematurely. If either is not flat, they must be resurfaced before reassembly.

Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) including air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) .
  1. Loosen drive belt tensioner (6B209). Remove drive belts (8620) .
  1. If LH cylinder head (6049) is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766) .
    1. Remove power steering pump front mounting bracket retaining bolts.
    1. Remove generator (GEN) (10346) and belt idler pulley (8678).
    1. Remove power steering pump/generator bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected, place pump/bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
  1. If RH cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove drive belts .
    1. If equipped with A/C, remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected and position A/C compressor (19703) aside.
    1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424) .
  1. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  1. Remove fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
  1. Remove lower intake manifold as outlined.
  1. Remove exhaust manifolds (9430) as outlined.
  1. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow rocker arm (6564) to be lifted off the push rod (6565) and rotate to one side.
  1. Remove push rods . Identify position of each push rod . Push rods should be installed in their original position during assembly.
  1. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
  1. Remove cylinder heads .
  1. Remove and discard old head gaskets (6051) .
Installation
  1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolts and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
    Clean cylinder head, intake manifold , valve cover (6582) and head gasket surfaces. If cylinder head was removed for head gasket replacement, check flatness and sealing areas for scratches of cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces. Refer to Section 03-00 for procedure.
  2. Position new head gaskets onto cylinder block (6010) using cylinder head to block dowels (6A008) for alignment.

      • Go to next bolt in sequence.

    Dip each push rod end in Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A and install push rods in their original position.
  8. For each valve, rotate crankshaft (6303) until valve tappet (6500) rests on the heel (base circle) of the camshaft lobe, before tightening rocker arm seat retaining bolts to 7-15 Nm (5-11 lb-ft) maximum.
  9. Lubricate all rocker arms with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A. Final-tighten the rocker arm seat bolts to 30-40 Nm (22-30 lb-ft). For final tightening, camshaft (6250) may be in any position.
  10. Install exhaust manifolds as outlined.
  11. Install lower intake manifold as outlined.
  12. Install fuel injection supply manifold .
  13. Position valve cover and new valve cover gasket (6584) on cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft).
  14. Install upper intake manifold .Install spark plugs (12405) , if removed.
  15. Connect ignition wires to the spark plugs .
  16. If LH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install generator/power steering pump mounting bracket.
    1. Install generator .
    1. Install main accessory drive belt tensioner .
    1. Install power steering pump (3A674) .
    1. Install power steering pump support bracket.If RH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
    1. If equipped with A/C, install A/C compressor mounting brackets (2882) and A/C compressor .
  17. Install drive belt and tighten to specification.
  18. Connect battery ground cable .
  19. Install air cleaner outlet tube.

Broken timing belt, what sort of damage to expect


if the timing belt has snapped, expect the cylinder head to need replacing as some of the valves will have hit the pistons (which may also need replacing but not always) and snapped, and they will almost certainly have damaged the cylinder head beyond repair.
when you add the cost of the new belt, gaskets, seals and labour charges, even if there is no damage to the pistons and barrels, it may be more economical to find a replacement engine.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but timing belt failure is a major problem and does major damage.

Here at my repair shop have never had to replace a cylinder head, due to timing belt failure, just replace bent valve's and machine head.

Replacing a cylinder head gasket is a miss or a hit. In some cases, just replacing the gasket may work. But if the cylinder head is bend, dealer may ask to replace it, because "machined aluminum heads rarely works". In this case the cost may be more than $1000. It is a good idea to send the cylinder head for inspection, in a machine shop. They charge $150 for inspecting, checking, cleaning and if necessary machining the head.
If the timing belt will be replaced this is an extra cost. If someone will just replace the gasket, on a bend cylinder head, it is more likely to blow out again. This problem can be solved if the gasket be replaced properly, checking and taking care for the cylinder head too.
As the coolant warms up, it expands and for that reason you have two marks at coolant bottle. Down cold and up hot. It is normal for the coolant to overflow from coolant bottle, if it is filled to the upper mark with engine cold, way up the cold coolant mark. Let engine to cool down overnight and set the level at coolant bottle at the lover mark cold. If it will overflow again this is a bad sign. The pressure at combustion chamber varies from 75 in idle up to 150 or more in higher RPM. If the cylinder head gasket is blown, then gases are blown into the cooling system, increasing the pressure, the radiator cap pressure relief valve is open and coolant is discharged in the coolant bottle. In such cases it is common for the coolant bottle to boil. You can observe gases discharging in the bottle, mixed with coolant, from the cooling system. These are symptoms of a blown cylinder head gasket. Because you replaced it once, there might be a bad (bend, deformed) CYLINDER HEAD too.
To find it out you have to perform cylinder compression test on your car (PROFESSIONALLY).
1. Start with a normal ("static") compression test. To eliminate rings, valves, holes in pistons, that sort of things. A normal cylinder balance test is also helpful (so you know which, if any, cylinder is presenting a problem). Engine should be warm.
2. Put all spark plugs but one back in. Ground that plug wire to prevent module damage. Disconnect that injector on a port fuel system.
3. Put your compression tester into the empty hole. The test can be done without a Shrader valve, but most people recommended leaving the valve in the gauge and "burping" the gauge every 5-6 "puffs".
4. Start the engine and take a reading. Write it down
5. Now goose the throttle for a "snap acceleration" reading. Reading should rise. Write it down NOTE: Don't use the gas pedal for this snap acceleration. The idea is to manually open then close throttle as fast as possible while without speeding up the engine. This forces the engine to take a "gulp" of air.
6. Now write down your readings for at least the bad cylinder (if there is a single bad cylinder) and maybe 2-3 good ones. Make a chart like this: CYL STATIC COMPR IDLE -RUNNING COMPR - SNAP Cyl 1 150 75 125 Cyl 2 175 80 130 Cyl 3 160 75 120 Cyl 4 160 80 125
7. ANALYSIS: Running compression at idle should be 50-75 psi (about half cranking compression). Snap throttle compression should be about 80% of cranking compression.
Consult a professional with the readings. If the gasket is to bad, you may have very low compression at lease in one cylinder.
If you will get a positive confirmation for a bad cylinder head then you have two options:
REBUILD THE CYLINDER HEAD or REPLACE IT.

Is it normal to have to replace pulley, timing belt and fan belt in renault megane cabriolet after 5 years. How much do these spare parts cost? Have been quoted £750 parts and 6 hour labour costs.


Timing belt on 4 cylinder Renaults should be changed every 50-60000 Km. Consequence of not doing so is having the belt break, and damaging valves and valve lifters (extremely costly) . Replacing the belt is time consuming, and labor intensive. So while the belt is out, its is a good investment to replace pulley, belt tensioner/ roller bearing and water pump belt, which is nearby and has to be taken out anyway, for timing belt replacement. Meganes dont have fan belts, they use electric motors for this duty.

Just a new belt--the valves on gas engines do not hit the piston like on diesel(this is because diesel has very high compression)
