Golf e mk4 is noisey sounds like tappets, but various mechanics reckon that it is hydraulic cylinder shims? car has done 66k and not been looked after, just had it serviced and still noisey. it needs a timing belt so is it worth having it stripped down and re-done while timing belt is off, been told its expensive labour costs as it will take ages. should i have it done properly and peace of mind? will it cure the tapping noise? is it worth having the big job done?

BAD LIFTERS WILL MAKE A NOISE.IF VALVE LIFTERS AND LOWER SPRING SEALS BEEN REPLACED AND LIFTERS STILL NOISEY.EITHER ENGINE OIL TOO THICK OR ENGINE NEED OIL CHANGE + FILTER CHANGE.DIRTY OIL CAUSE LIFTER NOISE OR OIL PASSAGES IN THE CYLINDER HEAD STOPPED UP NOT ALLOWING LIFTERS TO GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF OIL.OR OIL PRESSURE TO LOW DUE TO FAULTY OIL PUMP.OIL PRESSURE SHOULD BE 29 PSI @2000 RPM. TRYING ADDING SOME SEAFOAM CLEANER IN CRANK CASE IF OIL PASSAGES STOPPED UP IT WILL CLEAN OUT OIL SLUDGE.GO TO AUTO PARTS STORE TELL THEM YOU NEED SEAFOAM.AFTER 500 MILES YOU NEED TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER AGAIN. Does a 1999 frod contour have hydraulic lifters or mechanical lifters

Both the 2.0 liter 4-cylinder, and the 2.5 liter V6 are overhead cam engines. While all years of the V6 us hydraulic tappets, the 4-cylinder engines varied. From 1998 and earlier, they had hydraulic tappets. From 1999 on, they used shimmed mechanical tappets. Adjusting valve clearance on the later engines is a little involved, and, if you're not familiar with the procedure, it is perhaps best left to a professional mechanic who is familiar with the engine.

Hi We have a Horrible rattling Noise from Beety Its been advised Tappets are needing done What does this involve & Can A Dealer In Central Scotland Be advised What damage? can I do by contiuing to...

The tappets are essentially little levers that make the valves move up an down to allow fuel and air to enter your cylinder and exhaust to exit the cylinder (essentially connect the valve to the cam shaft). The tappets may be adjusted by screws, shims or even self-adjusting hydraulic lifters.

The risk is that you will damage the valve seat (where the valve contacts the cylinder head to close the cylinder area during compression and combustion).

A dealer should be able to adjust them for about 150 quid if they are not the self-adjusting hydraulic type. If self-adjusting feature is broken, then price will be higher..

Has a ticking in the motor but its never been without oil.u hear the ticking on th right side of the motor

these vehicles do not have hydraulic tappets but shims and from the sound of it it could be a follower worn through or a noisey worn camshaft and the only way to find out is to take the top off and have a good look and measure the tappet settings ,inllet 12th and exhaust 15th

Vehicle will not start after cambelt and cylinder head refitment

providing all the work is done correctly then it might take a while to start as you need to get the oil into the hydraulic tappets.. then it still might sound noisey untill it has done 10 - 20 miles

Tappets making a constant noise

i would suggest asking your mechanic which viscosity(thickness) oil he put back in and check it against the manufacturers recommendation as if it isto thin then it will make your tappets unusally noisey if he has put in the correct oil then i would say that they were quiet because of the old gungy oil and they either need adjusting or if they are hydraulic then the lifters need replacing
