1994 Volvo 960 engine cuts off at high speeds

1994 Volvo 940 cuts off at high speeds. Will start back up after car slows down. Sound like a fuel filter problem?

    Can you provide more details? Does the engine overheat at all? Are there any other accompanying symptoms?

    You say it will start up again, after the car slows down. So, without coming to a full stop, you can turn the ignition key to restart the engine, or does the engine just restart, on its own, after the car slows?

    My 1993 volvo 940 cuts out at more than 1/4 throttle, then quits alltogther. Once cool, it starts and runs normally.

It sounds like a fuel problem as opposed to an electrical fault. Start with the easiest fixes first ..
The next time the car comes to a grinding halt quickly remove the petrol filler cap and listen for air rushing into the tank. If you can hear air rushing into the tank that means a vacuum has been created inside it.

There are 2 causes of a vacuum inside the petrol tank. One is that the air-valve in the filler cap is blocked (there's usually holes in the filler cap covered by a rubber type ring) and the other is that the breather tube from the tank to atmosphere becomes blocked with dirt and debris thrown up by the roadwheels. Try driving the car with the fuel cap removed or very loose so that air can easily enter the tank. If the car still comes to a halt with the same symptoms, then there isn't a vacuum being caused within the tank.

A failing fuel pump can cause the same problems. I once owned a VW that had the symptoms you describe. The in-tank fuel pump was 'on its last legs' and when replaced the car was perfect.

A blocked fuel filter can also cause the same problems.

Here in the UK the Volvo 960 is either a straight-six 2.5 litre or 3 litre engine. I would guess that Volvos in North America share a pretty much the same mechanical layout depsite model differences. A UK 960 has two fuel pumps. One is located within the fuel tank and is accessed via an inspection plate behind the rear passenger seats (estate/station wagon models). The other fuel pump sits in a bracket underneath the car alongside the fuel filter, just aft of the front passenger seat (driver seat in the US..).

The in-tank fuel pump does most of the work, lifting the fuel out of the tank. The under-car pump lifts the fuel to the engine (it shares the same fuel line). Start with the easiest fixes first - is there a vaccuum in the tank that 'slows'/'holds back' the fuel? Then look at the fuel filter which is supposed to be changed every 40,000 miles.

1. Check the Fuel Pressure Regulator. No sign of fuel should exist when the vacuum hose is pull out.
2. Check the relay (one by the side of dashboard and one in the fuse box engine bay) for the fuel pump and the injection system.

I would replace the fuel pump relay, and the engine speed sensor. I would need more information to rule one or the other out, but at this mileage, neither part is terribly expensive, and both have been known to cause your same exact condition

it may be a fuel pump fault. Cutting out and restarting is a classic sign of a failing fuel pump.

Here in the UK the VOlvo 960 is a 3 litre car (may be a different model to the USA version of the 960) and has 2 fuel pumps. One is situated in the tank and lifts the fuel into the pipeline system. The 2nd fuel pump is located underneath the car alongside the fuel filter underneath the passenger side (UK) and gives the fuel a boost to shove it up to the engine.

To check fuel pressure, find the pipe that goes to the injectors ... there usually is a connector where the metal pipe connects to the flexible rubber pipe. Undo the connector and switch the ignition on ... fuel should spray out at high pressure .. .high pressure .. not small squirts and dribbles.

Fuel pumps are damn expensive. It could also be a sensor at fault - like a crankshaft sensor. The cheapest way to get it sorted is to ask a workshop to identify the fault for you (you can do any work required) - they can check the sensors and electrics on their computer. Changing parts one by one to try and cure a fault can work out damn expensive .... get the fault identified for you first. Its worth the money ..

93 Volvo 940 Threw timing belt, now won't start


The same thing happened to my 94 volvo 960 the engine belt was having the same problem, i changed it the belt, it was fine for a few miles after that it just died, does not fire, not sure if it is getting fuel, but the mechanic says the timing belt went off. you may have to check the crank sensor on yours.

I am a volvo tech and your problem is fuel pressure ralated and i had same problem in 1995 850 turbo and the fuel pump was the problem and a used one is around 35.00

Need help wit belt 1194 940 volvo!


It is possible you are looking at the page for the 1994 960 and not the 940. The 960 had one (serpentine) belt. Your 940 has three. Hopefully chiltons has the repair order for the 940s as well.

These had problems with RPM Sensors, Fuel Pump Relay, Fuel Pump and the MAF Sensors. Also need to make sure the throttle body is clean and adjusted correctly!
