Hi there!

Try jacking up the rear axle stands. By hand, try and spin rear wheel - The opposite wheel should rotate in the opposite direction with you doing this. The driveshaft should be stationary.

If this is impossible. Check both wheels if it is solid or moves a little.
If it moves a little, I think the rear differential unit may have siezed. May be due to overheating, lack of lube, wear or broken gear teeth.

If one wheel is solid, strip the brakes to investigate why it is siezed.

The other option - it was side-swiped into an object and has bent the axletube/ driveshafts.

Hope this helps.

Please be kind as I am not able to see your problem in person!

I suggest jacking the rear end, have the front wheels locked inplace -- be careful!

release the Emergency Brake.

Disengage the Transmission (NEUTRAL)

Try to spin the rear wheels by hand.

I have seen a brake spring on the rear drum brakes of a car break, and cause the brakes to lock onto the hub, causing the EXACT same symptoms that you mention.

LET ME KNOW HOW THIS GOES!

If it is not the brake trick I mentioned, then please provide more info, like AUTO or MANUAL shift, have you checked the clutch engagement (MANUAL) or the Trans Fluid (AUTO).

Have you verified that the U-Joint is not broken?

    Thanks!

Where is the trans-axle belhousing located?

Trans-axle transmissions are transmissions and differentials in one housing with the axles coming directly out of that housing, its the housing that bolts to the engine with 2 axles coming out.
Only in these layouts:
front-engine, front-wheel, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive and rear mid-engine, rear-wheel drive.

Raise the drive wheels,in any towing job you need to lift the wheels that drive the car, your car,i would say would be the rear.

We would like to know if we can tow this car behind our motorhome with tow bar by just puting the trans in neutral.

dont tow car long distance in neutral. it burns up the transmission. if its rear wheel drive just disconnect the drive shaft. if front wheel drive you need to have the front wheels lifted while towing long distance

4L-60E trans interchange

Sorry it will not work, the internals are the same but the transmission housing has changed. The key distinction of the Later 4L60-E (1997-2006) from the Early 4L60-E (1992-1997) or 4L60 (1990-1992) or 700R4 (1982-1989) is the six-bolt "hex" rear output or tail-housing / adapter pattern. The previous versions featured a four-bolt square bolt pattern at the adapter or tail-housing. Additionally, the removable bell-housing is also another distinguishing feature.

Two-wheel-drive versions have tail-housings and typically a longer output shafts than four-wheel-drive versions, which have various adapter assemblies and a shorter output shaft.

Rear brake locked up

Is it a constant four wheel drive, i can assume you did not try and tow the vehicle in four wheel drive with the two front wheels up in the air????? sounds like you've broken the rear dif box!

I need towing a firebird 500 miles, how can i do

If towing that far of a distance place the front wheels on a tow dolley and pull it from the front with the car in nuetral. That is entriley to far to be pull from the rear will mess up the steering linkages.

Put in transmission in feburary.

you will still need add the proper type fluid to proper fill level, get under the truck, clean up transmission so you can visually monitor where the leak is coming from. Chock the wheels, emergency brake set, start and idle vehicle check for leaks. If trans is leaking it will probably be a front seal (oil will drip from small hole in the bottom of bell housing), pan gasket, loose cooling line to radiator, or rear tail shaft leak ( where drive shaft enters the trans.) Don't forget to check the lines for pin holes and the radiator for leaks.

Can a 2002 pontiac aztec be used as a tow dingy behind a motorhom

Do not tow it with any wheels on the ground it will burn up the trans and transfer case. If you use a dolly on the front remove the rear driveshaft.
