The newer limited slip is better, aka 430 type. Otherwise the open diff is pretty trouble free. The early limites slip "Sensitork" had very small gears that can break. BMW differentials are not compatible and would require extensive fabrication work to install.

BMW whine noises 70mph

Hello Robert Anderson,

I always ask the color when my friends are describing their car... and immediately ask the interior color too...
It helps me imagine their following sumptuous description...
Twin-turbos, 8 speed automatic, Walnut grain...
fuzzy DICE... Plastic idols affixed to the dash (etc.)...
all helps in the visualizations

but... for your car I imagine a noise.

Okay... a 70 mph whine usually means the rear end differential gears have gotten out of alignment.

It could mean a few other things... but that is the biggie!

Hope this helps!

Where can I get a refurbished diff or internal gears so I can rebuild the diff myself ? & how much would it set me back,a new 1 fitted by BMW here in Limerick Ireland is near €3500 euros

have you gone on line to look for rebuilders or differential parts suppliers. that would be the first place to look. then you should by a manual on differentials to know what is needed both in tooling and specs for clearances and torque values.

My 2014 kodiac450 starts missing on acceleration when in differential lock?

check the power draw for the diff lock system as it appears that the current draw is robbing the ECM of enough power to work and run the engine. You may have to have the alternator bench tested for current output. Check condition and tension of drive belt.

I hear a humming noise in the rear when driving my 2001 BMW 325I. Stops when in neutral. gets louder as I excellerate

I expect you have a damaged rear differential. It is a common problem on these BMW's. I have just had mine replaced. I used a second hand diff unit from a breakers, which cost £281 (inc VAT and delivery). It arrived the day after I ordered it. A decent garage will charge you less than £200 to fit it.

Hello,this is Nick...i've got a 1990 bmw 3 series

yes there are many companies that sell window kits to convert the car, as far as the diff noise goes u need a load of special tools to do this repair, by the time u buy all the tools to set the gears up correctly u could pay someone to do it. Do you still want to do the diff gear set?

The 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee was prone to bad diff bearings because they changed the plant where they were made. The new plant used inferior materials. The only way to fix it is to replace and set the diff clearences.
