Question about 1990 Nissan 300ZX
The rpm are running high around 5rpm @ 85mph
I have a 1990 nissan 300zx and the tranny was replaced, but when they put it back together the shifter slides up and down freely in 1st and 2nd and it seems to lose its place when finding a gear, but once you have it in gear, it stays there, this includes reverse and drive. Weird, what was placed wrong.

I had the same problem in my 1990 300zx automatic transmission.
The first problem was that there was a leak between the tranny and the torque converter. So the release of pressure made it so that the fluid just sat there inside the tranny getting hotter and hotter. Eventually, it corroded out the gears.
So i got a new transmission and that one didn't have 4th gear at all because the shifter solenoid was defective on arrival.
They replaced the shifter solenoid and that seemed to fix the problem.

I assume this is an automatic transmission. Is it a twin turbo or a non-turbo model? It sounds like you've lost fourth gear and are stuck in 3rd - those RPM would be about right. If you can provide more information, it will probably help in the diagnosis.
