I cant shift my car out of park because the cable broke. where can i find one? and what is the name of the part

when you shift it out of park and you think you are in drive cut car off and leave it in gear try starting it if it starts it is the shift cable you are not leaving park try it it is free the cable or plastic connector on the tranny could be broke

More than likely you can fix it yourself. There is a possibility first something has fallen into the shift mechanism and is blocking it from going into park. The other possibility is the shift interlock cable may have slipped off, or the cable broke.
To fix this you would have to open the shift console. The interlock cable is the small one, it should attach to some sort of lever that prevents the car from shifting into or out of park.
I hope yours has a floor shifter rather than a column shift, they are easier to fix. The last possibility is there is something in the engine compartment that is preventing the shift lever from reaching park, and though it's not likely I've seen it happen before.

Manually shift the truck into park at the transmission. Then make repairs to shift cable. Lock the truck and then use the key to unlock the door and start the truck.

ON NEWER CARS THERE IS A SHIFT LOCK CONNECTED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IN SOME WAY IE ELECTRIC OR CABLE. MORE LIKLY A CABLE. IF CABLE CAME DISSCONNECTED OR BROKE IT WILL NOT UNLOCK THE SHIFTER.

if pushing on brake and shifter not moveing ook under car at the cable as their is a plastic slelve thatright at the connection on trans and see if it broke, usually thats what occures and the sleve can be bought at and parts store for like 5.00

it is called the shift linkage... if your shifter is up by the steering wheel the linkage will be under the hood but sometimes very hard to get to because it can be behind the engine. if it is on the floor then it uses a cable system and the cable could have broke but from your problem it sounds like its on the steering wheel.

SOUNDS LIKE SHIFT CABLE IS AFTERMARKET AND MAYBE OUT OF ADJUSTMENT. USUALLY THERE IS A SMALL SLOT ADJUSTMENT ON CABLE AT TRANSMISSION. U CANT GET THE KEYS OUT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS NOT FULLY IN PARK

sounds like the transmition gear shift cable is streched out or the plastic coating around it may have broke. but first go under the truck and see if there is any thing wrong with the transmission linkage. this is located on the drivers side and will have a cable hooked to it( the cable is the shift cable). from the linkage you should be able to manualy put the truck in to park if you cant i would recomend taking it to a transmission shop.

check the top of trany, have someone move shifter through gears if arm on trany doesnt move then cable might have broke, if thats the case then use your hand move to park have someone start car with foot on the brake always holding brake now shift into drive this way you can get home,CAUTION MAKE SURE THEY HOLD BRAKE WHILE YOU SELECT DRIVE OR CAR WILL TAKE OFF, you must have in park to start car, good luck.
