Question about 1989 Cadillac Sedan DeVille

1 Answer

Engine races, misfires and stalls sometimes

My 1989 Deville has 53,000 original miles. The majority of times it runs great. However, there are times when it stalls on the open road and other times it races and misfires like a bucking bronco. It gets to a point where it becomes unreliable to use. However, it never fails to start. In the past year the ECM and the BCM were replaced. I just replaced the fuel injectors and it ran like a champ for a week but it is back to its old unreliable self. I am going to replace the oxygen sensor and fuel filter next.

Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Why would it stall, usually when slowing or braking, not consistently?

Have it serviced/tuned up, this should be done every ten thousand or so miles. If that does not resplve your problems, and it possibly will, then start looking to solve problem. You should tell your garage, (make sure you get recommendations for a good one,) about the problem before they embark on the work.

My car stalls and die after driving several miles

If the fuel pump go bad, the car will stall while you are driving, as no fuel is getting pumped up to the engine. If the plug wires, plugs or coils in ignition system are bad and are causing the engine to misfire, the engine will run rough. This may also cause the car to stall when driving. There are other problems that can make a car stall in the ignition system, the fuel system or in the drivetrain. If the timing belt breaks, the car will stall. If the computer itself stops working, the car will stall. My car dies when I drive for a short time.

Check O2/mapp sensor. Also if you can elaborate on the behavior of the engine as it stalls, is there smoke, does it race then suddenly die out or does it barely run at a very slow unsteady idol until it floods out?

Answering with as much detail as possible will help get a more definite answer.
Good luck.

Disappearing oil

It is burning it, and it may be sticking to the inside of the exhaust system, like the cat converter and muffler. Look at the exhaust when you start it from cold, and take a little sniff.

1989 EscortTac shows surges in RPM, but engine does not race up.

How many miles, has the timing belt ever been changed? (60,000-70,000 miles) when the belt gets near or over it's recommended change mileage it will get loose and cause the engine to run like it has a miss, mostly when cold, also u may need to do the following procedure, Escorts need this more than most other Ford cars
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
