I have a 2005 escape with 37K miles. It started dogging and I put some dry gas in with some supreme gas. No luck. I replaced the air filter and then the check engine light came on and I couldn't go over 40 mph. I had it towed to the dealer. They just replaced the #4 ignition cylinder, the dogging was the engine in safe mode because of the misfiring.

It is a possibilty that the fuel pump is malfunctioning, it is also a possibility the the fuel injectors are clogged, and need cleaning or that the cylinder valves are crusted with soot, and are causing a backdraft of exhaust to enter the cylinder chamber. Try using a fuel additive that cleans these parts on a regular basis (I do it every week despite the instructions for once every 1000 miles) and see if this helps the problem.
