My 2001 xterra started making a weird sound between 20 and 35 mph. It sounds like there is a leak in some pressure system.

Common Car Noises and Their Likely Causes Noise More Details Likely Cause Fixing It Clicking noise while turning Starts faint, gradually becomes more noticeable until very loud Failed outer CV joint (constant velocity joint) due to torn boot (most likely) or old age Replace either the whole axle assembly (recommended) or the outer CV joint Water pump noises Difficult to diagnose because of water pump's location Noise usually caused by damage to the bearings in failed water pump Only cure is replacing it. If possible do it at the same time as a timing belt replacement to cut down on labor costs Squeak or squeal from an engine belt Loud, high-pitched squeak or squeal Belts either need adjustment or replacing If belts only squeak when damp, they probably just need adjustment. 2000 Nissan Pathfinder, makes loud squeaking noise while driving between 0-35mph, bought a new timing belt a year ago and had AC belt replaced recently, squeaking is so loud it is almost disturbing to...

Very often the power steering belt can cause this noise if it is loose or just worn. The pump itself can cause a noise check and make sure it is full of fluid.

You need a harmonic balance. Very common problem!

Loose belt

If it is the belt, you need to buy a special tool made to relieve the pressure from the belt tensioner, As you do that the belt will slip off. Don't let anybody tell you that you can use a ratchet and socket to loosen the tension. If your tensioner is not designed to work like that, it will strip the bolt out. While you have the belt off, turn all of the pulleys and make sure that they are not the cause of the squeaking sound. Make sure to memorize where your belt goes, a serpentine belt can be very confusing to put back on if you don't remember how it came off.

Squeaky belts, maybe something with steering?

if the belts are loose, the power steering pump could be loading the belt in cornering.check the belts. And if you are twisting the belt ,the deflection should not be more than 20 degrees,if it is the belt should be
tightened.
