Car Battery draining over night

2001 Nissan Altima GXE
The battery drained overnight so I charged the battery and took it to a mechanic friend of my Pastor, who is supposed to be good with imports. He tested the battery as good, alternator as good, and starter as good. I kept having the problem so I bought a brand new Duralast GOLD from Autozone. It only lasted (one week)!! I tried to start my car this morning and it was completely dead. Please help! Dave

Something is shorted and it could be very difficult to find sometimes. It could be something as simple as a button being pressed when it shouldn't turning on a light or feature that runs all the time, but in a 2001 that is unlikely as it should turn off all lights after a certain period of time. It could be something in the radio. What I suggest is to pull one fuse at a time for accessories, check your manual for what each fuse powers. If the battery still drains with that fuse out then put it back in a pull another. When you find the fuse that allows your battery to keep it's charge then you will have a much smaller field of offending components.

For example, if you pull the fuse that powers the radio and heater, and the battery keeps it's charge then you know it is either the heater or radio causing your problem.

This can take a few weeks to do completly but won't cost you a penny to do.

Something is draining the power I recommend you take it to a mechanic or a friend to be checked, hard to say what may be the problem without looking around.

Sounds like you have an electrical drain somewhere in the car.did you recently install a radio or other device such as an alarm.the circuit is probably draining overnight.also check that the battery terminals are clean and tightened down.

slow drain somewhere. to locate pull the negative cable and hook a 12 volt light between the post and cable. the light should light but if not charge battery then with the light lit pull fuses one at a time until you locate the one or ones that turn the light off then with voltmeter check the cuircuts.

Battery goes dead but there is still a clicking sound

he sounds , not too good.
here is a check list.
1: fuses all good, check them.
2: battery always at 12.6vdc rested 4hrs or overnight.
no?, then you have a bad battery ! or phantom drain .
3: start car, battery voltage at 13.3v to 15v, if not charge system is kaput. (note i didnt say a part bad)

one of those. is bad.
the charge lamp must be on , key on, then go off running, is it?

if you have phantom drain, here is the test.

10 amp draw draining battery overnight on 99 tahoe

I have done this before, put about a 10 amp charger on the battery. Pull the courtesy light fuse first. Look at the battery charger, it is probably charging several amps, pull one fuse at a time. When the charging amps drops down you found the fuse the controls the problem. I had a car several years ago that someone pulled the seat belt all the way out, somehow it was pulling a load and draining the battery overnight.

My 1995 altima gxe runs fine off the alternator but my battery is getting drained and wont restart after a 30 min drive . i removed the alarm system because the first symptoms were my alarm freaking out ,...

Most likely a bad alternator, voltage regulator, battery, or a massive power drain in the system. Have the alternator and battery tested at a Auto Zone or Kragen. The voltage regulator is part of the alternator. An if you have a power drain your going to need to trace the source to correct it.

My car discharges the battery over night and everything is off, it is a 2002 Nissan Altima, thank you.

you may have to find out if there is something staying on with the key off.but since the first time this happend was the battery --fully-- recharged.this will take about four hours on a commercial battery charger. a small charger may be feft on overnight but this still guess work. if the battery has removeable vent caps get a cheap ball tester and see if it shws all cells fully charged,if no vent caps read the battery voltage should be 12.7. do not overcharge it. without a amp meter you cant see the key off drain on the batterybut if you remove the cable and have a large spark when touching it to the battery it has a drain. asmallspark will be evident on all cars because there are small drains when the key is off from the various computers on the car your car has about 5. there are also certain things that remain on until timed out, when you replace the cable that will stop draing after a few seconds. so finding a drain can be quite hard. normal things like interiour, trunk lights brake lights stuck on are easier to fix.

Battery is not holding a charge on my 2003 Nissan Altima.

You might have a parasitic drain on your battery. Meaning something isn't shutting off like it should be draining your battery. Your positive battery cable might be shorted to ground not allowing power to flow.

1998 Nissan Altima GXE squealing noise

Could be the bearings in your alternator have gone dry and your alternator is about to quit out on you. I had a friend with an 01 altima and we could always hear him coming before we saw him because of this very problem. Changed the alternator out and noise went away. Thanks for using FixYa!

Nissan Wont hold a charge

Hi. this is defiantly a slow or major drain that is occurring within this vehicle. Here is a test that you can preform that will help you find this battery drain so you can illuminate this issue.

--BATTERY DRAINAGE TEST PROCEDURE--

Using a 12-volt test light, hook one end to the negative battery post the other end to the negative battery cable you just disconnected. The test light will glow or "light" if there is a drain. If the "light or glow" is faint, that is probably normal draw for the clock or computer. If the "light or glow" is bright, then there is a large drain. That should be corrected. Now start removing and replacing the fuses one by one until the light goes out; that one will be the circuit with the drain. Remember to hold in the button in the door jam for the interior lights.

Please rate and god bless:)
