I have a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero I have determined I have a faulty fuel pump. Can you get to the fuel pump through an access panel in the trunk? I think I read that somewhere............

Thanks,
Steve

Hi,

If you are checking before the pressure at the fuel line in the engine bay, then it is possible that the filter may also be an issue. In most instances, the filter is somewhere along the fuel line from the tank and would be underneath the car's trunk. In some cases the filter would be inside the tank together with the pump.

If at the tank's outlet the pressure is relatively low, then as you posted, it could be the fuel pump which is inside the tank. It is also possible that dirt, sand, debris may be blocking the inlet port of the pump, try banging on the tank to agitate with the pump off. Cleaning/replacing the fuel pump would of course necessitate tank removal.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Ran out of fuel. Now why won't it start?

You might not have enough pressure. The fuel pump cools itself with fuel and if it runs dry it will burn up seals quickly. Measure the rail pressure to make sure its correct. If its a little low the injectors wont open properly and let enough fuel in to start.

Otherwise check your spark plugs by cranking with a plug test light in line

I have a 95 grand Cherokee. I'm getting fuel, and I'm getting spark. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and it still wont start. I spray starting fluid in carb, it starts and dies. Please help

what does getting mean? which engine, 4Liter or 5.2 or what?
spark at all cylinders is getting and timed right?
runs on test fuel so sparks good, that means fuel is bad
or flooding or too little fuel.
code 12 cranking for 5 seconds, means sensors are ok.
why replace parts that make spark when sparks good, it run on test fuel, why worry spark.? and not just fueling.?

now lets do fuel, step one is fuel pressure, not squirt tests.or dribble test. a real tool called,a fuel pressure gauge that works, and nothing else, (unless rail is dry and now we know its not)

if all spark plug tips are dry, are they?
then its not injecting, (the ECU can cut injection for 2 reasons) ask
or there is no real pressure.
so we open the FSM and read page FUELING
49psi is idle pressure, (more cranking with so little vacuum)

the tests are all there,

My nissan exalta sta 2000 model, motor idles but dies as soon as you give it gas.. already change spark plugs, tune up, replace engine gasket and fuel filter..

Has the car been running on empty recently? Running with low fuel can damage your fuel pump because on some cars the gasoline is the lube for the pump. a bad fuel pump could be the problem. Look up some YouTube videos on how to diagnose

I have a 1995 ford f250 5.8 gas first thing in the morning I have to shoot ether to get it to start after that starts right up idles a little ruff under heavy acceleration it sputters backfires and wants...

Sounds like your fuel pump starting to die. It is not getting enough gas under heavy acceleration which is 100% fuel pump slowly dying. At start up it might not be building up enough fuel pressure to feed the system but the shot of ether and engine cranking helps pressure the system just enough for the fuel pump to trickle the gas and run the engine at low rpms.

Engine cranks but will not turn over! give it a shot of starter fluid then it will start! or wait 4hours to start it

On a '99 model car, sooner or later you are going to want to know what your fuel pressure reading is, both engine off and engine running. Expect it of course, on a 14 year old car, that is when electrical things start going south, everything from motors, connections, old wiring. I drive old cars, you just deal with it all the time.

You know you have a fuel problem. If the car runs fine and dandy after you shoot fluid to start it, and if it has no problem with hot re-starts, that could be something not turning the pump on as it should, but once the engine has started, something like the oil pressure switch is used to keep the pump running. Hot restarts may happen before the pressure in the lines has bled down enough to cause no start.

The car's fuel system and the fuel pump circuit are not that complicated, really. Once you understand it just a little, you realize why maintaining a specified fuel pressure is so critical in fuel injected engines. The pressure is meant to be applied to the fuel injectors inlet bath.
You could pay $50 - 100 to have your fuel pressure checked. Or, you could pay about $40 for a fuel pressure gauge and kit, and learn how to check it yourself, both the pressure and a lot of other things as well. Did you know that the proper way is to check pressure first with key on, not starting the car? That means the pump has to turn on to pressurize the system just by turning the key to on-and it should for about 2 seconds.
okay, enough, enough. good luck there, pat. save a lot of money and do it yourself, your car is a good candidate and it will love you back...lol

1996 4.3 wont start. Turns over, Spark OK, fuel 55psi

Fuel pressure is a little low. Will it start with a couple shots of carb spray in the throttle body? If it does and continues to run than the fuel pump is not providing enough pressure to to open the mechanical poppet valves on the end of the injectors. minimum fuel pressure is 58 psi. One PSI below spec is enough to make it not start.

Also check to make sure there is spark at each cylinder. just because there is spark at the ignition coil does not mean it is getting the the spark plugs. you may have a bad cap or a rotor that is burned through.

Engine stalls right after start up has fuel press.

Fuel pump. It may have some pressure but not enough pressure to run the car properly. We just had to replace the pump on my son's 97 s10. It had a little pressure but not enough to run. Would start up and die as soon as you started into the throttle. They can check the pressure at a repair shop - you need a special guage.

Got fire but wont stay running without starter fluid ]

You may have a dirty Fuel filter or a bad fuel pump and will need to be replaced. Start with the fuel filter first since it's the easier one to replace and if you can get and fuel pressure regulator, check the fuel pressure at the shredder valve to make sure the fuel pump is pushing enough pressure. Not sure which engine code you have, X should have 42-45psi and the W should have 62-65psi. Good luck and hope this helps.

Dont know whether its the fuel pump or something else

How did you determine its not the fuel pump?It could be the fuel filter but I dont think so.Your truck requires a certain amount of fuel pressure to start and a different amount to run properly. You would have to check what your fuel pressure is to say its not the pump.It should be something like 65 psi to start and 55psi to run.Even though you can hear the pump come on when turn the key it might not be putting out enough pressure to start the truck.I realize im a little late with this post but it might helpfull to others.
