Question about 2001 Chrysler Concorde

Air Bag light is ON

It started with the clicking every time I had to turn the steering wheel. After the clicking stopped the light came on. At the same time horn and cruise control stopped working too. Changing the airbag didn't solve the problem. Please help!

Check your fuses and connections if thats not it you have a short somewhere

How to remove the steering wheel for replacement


SIR DISABLE:
DRIVER SIDE
Many service procedures require the air bag system to be disabled to prevent accidental deployment. The air bag system can maintain sufficient voltage to cause deployment for up to 2 minutes after the ignition switch is turned off, the battery ground cable is disconnected or the DERM fuse is removed. If the inflator module is disconnected from the deployment loop by the following procedure, service can begin immediately without waiting for the 2 minute time period to elapse.
  1. Turn steering wheel so that vehicle wheels are pointed straight ahead.
  2. Turn ignition switch to Lock position and remove key.
  3. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
  4. Remove steering column filler panel.
  5. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect yellow two-way connector at base of steering column, Fig. 1.
PASSENGER SIDE
  1. Remove air bag fuse from fuse block.
SIR ENABLE:
Driver Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Connect yellow two-way connector and install connector position assurance (CPA).
  3. Install steering column filler panel.
  4. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  5. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.
Passenger Side
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK and remove key.
  2. Insert air bag fuse into fuse block.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN and verify that the air bag warning lamp flashes seven times then turns off.

Why does the air bag light come on


You need to have a repair facility check for codes in the BODY computer to verify, but I believe your CLOCK spring, located in the steering column beneath the steering wheel is bad. This clock spring allows continuity between the air bag and air bag system when the steering wheel is turned. You are experiencing momentary breaks in the circuit when the steering wheel is turning and the body computer is sensing this and is setting off the air bag light and the beeper alarm. A body code will verify this. It is not a major job to replace the clock spring and involves pulling the steering wheel off to access it.

Signal light won't click off


The plastic canceling cam in the steering wheel, well, behind the wheel-you have to pull the steering wheel off to access it. It is probably broken. New ones are available at a parts store. Check a repair manual for caution notes and how to work in this area without activating the air bag. You have to take off the negative battery cable, and wait about 30 minutes before starting repairs around the air bag.

Airbag light is on horn is not working what to do


Hi, odds are your clockspring has broken. You'll have to remove the steering wheel to access the clockspring, which will require the use of a steering wheel puller. I have pasted procedures below from autozone.com. After removing the airbag and before removing the steering wheel, you can verify that the clockspring has failed, if desired, by testing the continuity of the wires from the airbag to the bottom of the steering column. Removal & Installation CAUTION The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bag, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

2. Turn the ignition key cylinder to the LOCK position and remove the key. Turn the steering wheel a half turn toward the left until the steering column becomes locked in position.

3. Remove the 3 bolts attaching the air bag module to the steering wheel. Remove the air bag module.


CAUTION Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) battery cable. Allow the system capacitor to discharge for at least 2 minutes before continuing with the removal procedure. This will disable the air bag system.

4. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the air bag module, horn switch and speed control switches.

5. Remove the routing clip for the wiring harness from the air bag module studs.

6. Remove the steering wheel mounting nut from the steering column shaft and remove the steering wheel damper from the steering wheel.

7. Using a steering wheel puller tool, remove the steering wheel from the steering column shaft. Do not thread the steering wheel puller tool bolts into the steering wheel more than a 1/2 in. or damage to the SRS clockspring will result. Do not hammer or bump the steering column or shaft when removing the steering wheel
8. Remove and replace the clockspring.

To install:
1. Before installing the steering wheel, the clockspring must be centered . Center the clockspring as follows:
a. Disengage the lock mechanism by depressing the 2 plastic locking pins.

b. Turn the clockspring rotor clockwise until it stops, while the lock mechanism is disengaged. Do not use excessive force.

c. From the end of the clockwise travel, turn the clockspring rotor counter-clockwise. The clockspring wires should be at the top. Engage the clockspring locking pins.

d. Turn the clockspring a 1/2 additional rotation counter-clockwise from the center locked position. This should put the clockspring wiring at the bottom.

e. The clockspring is now correctly positioned for installation of the steering wheel.


2. Install the steering wheel onto the steering column shaft. Make sure the master splines of the steering wheel and steering shaft are in correct alignment. Be sure the flats on the steering wheel align with the formations on the clockspring. All wiring leads from the clockspring must be routed correctly.

3. Install the steering wheel damper onto the steering wheel in its original position.

4.Install the steering wheel-to-steering shaft retaining nut. Torque the retaining nut to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).

5. Reconnect the horn switch wiring lead from the clockspring, onto the steering wheel horn switch wiring.

6. If equipped with speed control, reconnect the speed control wiring from the clockspring onto the speed control switch.

7. Install the wiring lead from the clockspring onto the air bag module. Make the wiring connection onto the air bag module, by pressing straight in on the connector. Be sure it is fully seated.

8. Install the air bag module to the steering wheel and then install the 3 air bag module attaching nuts. Torque all 3 air bag module attaching nuts to 100 inch lbs. (11 Nm).

9. When reconnecting the battery on a vehicle that has had the air bag removed, the following procedure should be used:
a. Connect the DRB or equivalent scan tool, to the ASDM diagnostic 6-way connector.
b. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Exit the vehicle with the DRB, and install the latest version of the proper diagnostic cartridge into the DRB.
c. Make sure there are no occupants in the vehicle and reconnect the negative battery cable.
d. Using the DRB, read and record active or stored fault codes. Take appropriate actions to correct any faults.
e. Erase stored fault codes. If problems remain, fault codes will not erase.
f. From the passenger side of the vehicle, turn the ignition key to OFF and then ON , observing the instrument cluster air bag lamp. It should go ON for 6-8 seconds, then go out. This will indicate that the air bag system is functioning normally.


WARNING If the air bag warning lamp fails to light, blinks ON and OFF or goes ON and stays ON, there is an air bag system malfunction.

Test the operation of any steering column functions such as the horn, lights or speed control system.

Road test vehicle. Be sure the speed control and steering systems are functioning properly

I have a 1996 Miata where the alarm system goes off no matter what I do to the secuirty switch on the steering column. It can be in the off position or on and open a door and the alarm contiues to go off....

This is due to a broken clockspring behind the steering wheel. It works as a constant contact for all acessories on the steering wheel to include the air bag system. It is a simple ribbon of wire to allow for turning of the wheel incased in a plastic housing that shouldn't be messed with. If you mess with it internally, you run the risk of the airbag deploying in your face!! It is best purchased from BMW.

When the airbag light (SRS) is on or blinks it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called the clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the steering wheel while maintaining a mechanical connection to the airgag mounted on the steering wheel, to replace this part you must disarm the airbag system and remove the steering wheel, this requires a special steering wheel puller tool and that you disarm the airbag system before you start the work, to do this disconnect the battery negative cable for 1/2 hour prior.

2003 2500HD Duramax...intermittent 'service air bag' and light coming on


could be a steering wheel sir coil,,,behin d the steering wheel there is a sir coil which electrically connects the air bag to the car thru this coil that allows the steering wheel to turn with out getting twisted wires,but sometimes that coil and have intermitent contact and give a air bag light at times,could be other things , but most likely that,no way to check it,,,get the trouble code and that will lead you more in a direction on it,,prob just gotta replace it, i would take to dealer if you misinstall the new one you can wreck it,,

Air bag light on


You have a sliding contact behind the steering wheel (called a clock spring). It is probably bad & needs replacing. Need to remove steering wheel for access. Usually there is a code set that says whether it's the driver side air badg or passenger side air bag that's the issue.
Somtimes, you can check it yourself by reading the number of flashes once you enter self test. Read owner manual or call dealer service dept and ask for self test procedure.
For a Ford, you turn key to "on" and then press the door dome lamp switch 7 times in 10 seconds and then read the codes. Not sure about Chrysler.

Cruise control,and radio controls on steering wheel, now air bag


The problem is the coiled ribbon contact under the steering wheel (we call it the clock-spring contact) that connects the stereing wheel controls to the steering column wiring harness, this is a printed circuit that is coiled to allow the wheel to move and still have a psychical contact for the wheel switch's and the airbag, anyway replace that contact coil, u must disarm the airbag to do this repair, follow the factory procedure to do this or serious injury can result if the airbag fires.
