Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

Car start but does not take

I ran out of petrol with my Golf 3 GSX 1997. I threw in petrol and the car started immediately. The next day (end of day), the car started and died under my foot. It starts now but does not take.

Is my injectors dirty because I drove into an empty tank and now car does not take. I also had the same problem last year but it was my timing belt that was broken. Now I can see my timing belt turns when I start the engine. I doubt it is the timing belt.

Please help

I unplugged the air flow sensor but it's still doing the same thing...swing but no take.

I'm going to replace the fuel filter to see if this sorts out my problem.

I was also thinking maybe it just needs a good kick-start. When the motor takes it will get rid of all the debris.

I will let you know the outcome.

1999 Civic - I ran out of Gas. After CAA add some Gas...The car Swing...but no take. So at the moment I am looking for a solution to get it going again. By the way, I never did anything with the Timing Belt.

Do I need to change it now?

    Hi All,

Been a while but I found the problem. My computer box burnt and that's what caused this whole scenario.

I had to replace the computer and fuse box and all is ok now.

As for Tough Girl, check if your fuel pump is pumping fuel. If not, then your fuel pump is faulty or some obstruction in your fuel line preventing the fuel from your tank.

If that does not work Try unplugging the air flow sensor.vw of that vintage are notorious for bad air flow sensors. The car will autoload last known running parameters into the ecu.

Two possibilities:
1. air bubbles along the fuel line or in the injector/pump;
2. clogged fuel filter/line.

Possibility #1 would require removal of air by bleeding or priming while #2 would require filter replacement or cleaning the line.

In some instances, it could be the fuel pump has some debris/dirt in the intake, impeller or discharge.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
