Not sure what the manufacturer called for and if the cap on the valve cover doesn't indicate what to use then most vehicles built around that time used 10w30. If the engine is loose(high mileage and/or burns oil ) then you may want to use 10w40. On newer cars or in extreme cold temps you can use 5w20. Again these are general rules that I go by and if you get someone that has the manual and tells you something different then of course go with that.
Now that depends on weather its auto or manual type g/box
Auto box now this depends on its either ...ie no trans oil/auto pan filter cloged up/body valves in g/box have sticking pistons/or pistons in pumps not working due to body valve or forward and reverse bands worn also due to above. plus it could be the torque convertor problems.
BUT a Manual box
Lack of oil/ clutch centre plate or pressure plate worn or broken springs /input shaft bearing/gear selectors ball and spring on selector indent jamed etc.
