1996 olds acheiva electrical problem

I hit a pot hole last week and now some of my electical is not working. The radio, defogger, dome lights don't work. The doors no longer lock when the car is put into gear. I checked the fuses, and they are ok. Any ideas?

I have 1999 Olds 88 LSS, and the heat/AC operate sporatically -- they can start to work/not work just by hitting a bump in the road. They want many hundreds $ to re-do electrical system (there may be a short..."), but I would like to try checking the connections and fuses myself first. Other electrical stuff works w/o problem. Any suggestions on how I get a diagram and what to look for would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Other than the dome light, all of the other electrical you posted operate using the ACC terminal of the IGN switch. The most likely then would be a loose connector either of the wiring harness, relay base or fuse holder fed by the ACC B+. Determining which is a matter of tracing the wiring from the ACC terminal to the fuse box/feeder (in some instances, there would be a relays likewise). From the fuse box/feeder it would go to the different fuses for the radio, defogger, auto door lock. The fuse(s) may be OK but their connectors might be loose and/or the main connector that feeds the fuse box/feeder being the common denominator.

The dome light should work even with no key in IGN swtich turned to ACC. But then again, it is fed from the fuse box/block straight from the battery's + terminal. Which leads back to the connector to the fuse box/block. Your best bet would be to remove/reconnect the different connectors going to and from the said fuse box/block.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

After hitting a pot hole, I began having electrical issues starting with the tire pressure light coming on then the nav screen and radio cut off. is this related to the collision?

start checking your battery connections, fuses, fuse box connections. all the wiring on the impact side of the car. it sounds like you knocked a ground wire or something loose.

The black wire in the harness is the ground circuit. The actual ground connection is around the back seat.
If you think the ground circuit is open you can splice into the wire and ground it near one of the tail lamps.

The 2 aren't related. My 96 dome light did the same thing, more so in the cold weather.I think that problem was in the dome light button in the door jamb.

HELP!! Having electrical issues with my 2005 Pontiac

electical is hard to diagnose with out being there. i would treat each problem seperately. first you will need to test the engine temp gauge sending unit. in a dealership this is easy with a scanner they can run a sweep test to se if the gauges are responding.you don't want the engine to over heat if the gauge is not working. next problem the dome light should be easy to fixe does the dome light work with the dome switch?remove the bulb and with the doors open and switch on check for voltage, if voltage check connection and or replace bulb. if no voltage check fuses for voltage.last will need to have the dtc po243 checked out by a repair shop. i hope this will help.

it's an electrical short you have a connector that is bad and probably shorted . chances are when you hit that pot hole you knocked a connector loose are a wire came off. if you replace the fuse and it still doesn't work that tells you that there is a loose wire or bad bulbs or a bad socket so you have to check each of these to find the problem and seeing is your dome light stays on that tells me that your circuit to the dimmer switch is shorting to your head light circuit so check the connetor to the dimmer switch. i hope this helps please rate this...thanks
