Question about 1985 Chevrolet C1500

1 Answer

Electrical Gremlin Suspect vehicle is a 1985 Chev 1/2 ton 4x4, ugly beyond description. Problem is amp draw on battery with ignition off and all switches off. Clue, or maybe red herring, is that the idjut lite for alternator is always illuminated to some degree with engine running at any rpm though charging of battery is normal. And...with the ignition off the alt light will illuminate brightly if the heat control is moved from the off position. Fan operates normally. Disconnecting fan puts out the alt light but draw is still present. Been at this 30 years but stumped on this one. Either I am missing the obvious or too old to reach simple conclusions anymore.

Hi

How about if you disconnect the battery negative, disconnect the main power lead from the alternator, insulate it and tuck it safely away, and then reconnect the battery negative. Is the draw still there? If not then I would say the diodes in the alternator are at fault.

Very best regards

Car died while driving, all the electrical went out. Replaced battery, all the lights and systems worked, but car wouldn't turn over, haven't been able to get started, any thoughts?

Check the starter draw with an inductive ammeter that has a probe that goes around the neg. or pos. wire to the battery.

If the draw is 75Amps to 100 Amps or above and it doesn't turn, the starter is bad.

If the draw is 0 or 1 Amp and the starter doesn't turn, it could be a solenoid on the starter, where the starter needs to be replaced.

I have a '97 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 PU. Very good

Sounds like a loose connection, Clean the fuse contacts. Sometimes lubricant and dirt gets on the contacts within the switch itself and this will interfere with power supply. Have you checked the wiper relay corrosion and wear on the relay contacts impair electrical connection. Brighten up contacts with fine sand paper and if the relay contacts are suspect, remove the cover and draw folded sand paper between the contacts until clean.

1988 Chev half ton kills battery. Put in new battery and starts right away. Ran it for about 20min then shut it off. Tried to restart and battery is completely dead. Needs boost to restart.

Have your starting system checked for starter draw.If the starter is drawing to many amps it will draw the battery down very quickly. Also have your charging system load tested to make sure the alternator is charging properly.Hope this helps.Good luck.

New battery dead after sitting for a week.jump start o.k. but no restart.

You have a draw! First, get a digital multi-meter. Next, shut the ignition and all systems to the off position. Next, disconnect the negative battery terminal. Using the "amp" feature of your multimeter hook a pair of aligator clips to the negative battery terminal first, then to the negative battery cable in the car. You should immediately begin to read "amperage". If you are reading a minute (say around 7 to 10 mili-amps), there is no issue. If you are reading in the .1 "amps" or range (even a little below that), you have a signifigant draw. If you're pulling about .1 amps or higher, start unplugging fuses untill the draw goes away. You have found the system pulling the draw! Diagnose from there! the Stick
