Question about 1991 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Fuel System I have a '91 Firebird Formula, and for some reason I can't get the fuel pump to kick in, The pump checks out ok, and so does the relay and the fuse. My question is, could it possibly be in the ignition switch, and if so can it be bypassed until I can get a new switch?

Yes, it can be bypassed. Find the hot lead to the pump and connect a toggle switch from a power source.

We cannot find the fule pump fuse in my 95 firebird,

There are 2 fuse boxes. One under the hood (Cover removed)

The other one is under the dash driver side near the kick panel. The power for the fuel pump is through the ignition fuse and the PCM that controls the fuel pump relay.

The fuel pump on my 1995 Firebird Formula quit running. I've even tried feeding 12v directly to the grey wire on the fuel pump relay and it still doesn't run. Can a generic fuel pump be installed...

No, the fuel pump in the tank needs to be replaced. It's not too bad to remove the tank, hopefully you don't have much gas in there though.

Good Luck!

FUEL SYSTEM SHUTTING DOWN, RELAY KICKS IN AND OUT,REPLACED FUEL PUMP,ECM,DISTRIBUTION BLOCK,MULTIFUNCTION MODULE, CHECKED ALL THE GROUNDS I CAN FIND

check your wiring from relay to fuel pump commector. possible cause is 2wires rubbing together causing the relay to kick in and out. if your wiring checks out ok then the problem will be in the fuel pump trying to short out. use ohm meter and test light to check wiring and pump.

Where can i find the fuel pump relay on my 91 firebird

The fuel pump relay is located on the engine driver's side of the firewall. It is held by a bracket with two other relays-primary and auxiallry fan. The fuel pump relay is between the 2 relays. It should have a test lead extending from the connector.
Good luck and thank you for using Fixya

the relay for the fuel pump is in the engine compartment, you can try to remove it and put it back in,while the key is in the run position.if you hear the pump working try turn ignition off and on untill you develop fuel pressure.

1989 formula firebird

On that particular model, you'll have to unbolt the rear end enough to lower it to gain access to dropping the tank. Use a jack and lower it about 6 - 8 inches. Once you're done that, you'll be able to remove the gas tank and access the fuel pump to replace it.
