Question about 2000 Pontiac Sunfire

2000 Sunfire automatic gear box adjustment

I have heard that there is a way to adjust the clutching system on an automatic 2000 sunfire gear box. Can somebody tell me how to do that? The problem is that it doesn't engage properly the first and second gear (this particularly when the car is cold). Also when I'm turning and it goes down from higher gears to second or first it "idles" until the car is straight again!
I know the best solution will be replacing it but for now I have to deal with the old one and try to adjust it. Any expedite suggestions?
Thanks,
Alberto

yes, I was loking in the car manual and actually that's exactly what I should do first! Go to the shop and have the fluid checked 'cause I am sure it is low and in bad shape and replace it along with gaskets and seals.

    Thanks!

No adjustment and transmission doesnt have a oil fill check stick take it to a transmission shop to check the fluid from under the car and add if needed what you are feeling is called slipping and it IS BAD

My 98 sunfire is stuck in 1st gear,i think everything else is gone...what can i look for to fix it?

Assuming it's automatic transmission and given the age of the vehicle I would look for a new transmission on eBay or at a nearby car recycler. Rebuilding the stuck transmission, which would likely be needed, could cost more than what the car is worth. Also, there should be plenty of these gear boxes around - a very, very common vehicle.
If a standard gear box (never seen one in the sunfire but anything is possible) then the problem could be as simple as a broken or stuck shift cable/linkage. You can test the clutch separately - the car should be able to roll roll once you press the clutch - so if the clutch can disengage and re-engage then check your shifting linkage next.

If I am not misstaken the clutch adjustment can only be done at the clutch pedal itself, in or out to set what is called freeplay.

Sunfire gt will not go into gear

It sounds like a bad clutch or clutch cable that is either stretched or out of adjustment! Or a hydrolic clutch line that has gone bad!

Do i have to adjust down the brake adjusters on drum brakes for a pontiac sunfire

Are they dragging ... are you replacing the shoes ... The only time that you need to back off an adjuster is to replace the shoes as far as I am aware.

It feels like the clutch may be going out. It's starting to shift hard, and the clutch has to go at least 2/3 to the floor before it engages. The fluid levels are fine. Any suggestions

you may have a hydrolic clutch .. check for a master cylinder similar to the brake master cyclinder near the clutch pdl .. it may be low on fluid .. .. i am assuming you meant that the clutch had to be near the floor before DISengaging .. if its a mechanical hookup instead then there is an adjustment for that (free pedal adj)

if the adjustment is out of range then you could have a bad throwout bearing .. but usually they make noise when the go bad ..
