the reason for hard shifting and selection when running is that the clutch shaft ( input shaft) is still turning even though the clutch pressure plate is released
it can be from oil/grease on the fly wheel /pressure plate face causing it to stick when hot
it may be from sticking clutch plate on the splines binding when hot
or it could be a dry spigot bush or failed bearing in the end of the crankshaft that positions the clutch shaft
check the pedal height adjustment and the position it is from the floor when starting to engage
It may be adjustment under the dash
The transmission has synchronisers to help line up the gears when you shift from one gear to another. If this transmission has been treated rough or rawhided and speed shifted, these synchroniser clips become bent and turn up and won't allow the synchroniser to slid over them into place and hold the transmission in gear. Eventually you will have to replace them. You will notice if you take it easy when shifting, it will get easier. Don't get in a hurry and jam the shifter or it will just get worse and they will have to be replaced. I hope you better understand how your shifter work. I hope you can buy some time before you have to put a fair amount of money it to it.
Any noises when you engage the clutch or shift? Could be several things. If it is hydraulic clutch, check the master cylinder level. It will be on the firewall just outside where pedals fasten to floor. Use dot 3 brake fluid to fill it if necessary. If it is full may have trouble with pressure plate and trowout bearing binding up.
I believe your clutch is not disengaging fully. When this happens it may be hard to get into first gear but subsequet shifts are easier due to the fact the vehicle is moving. You probably have a hydraulic clutch system which is low on fluid or may have air in the system. Before shifting into first gear or reverse try pumping the clutch pedal 5 or 6 times then shifting, if it goes into gear easier after this then you probably have air in the system, it can be bled similar to bleeding brakes. If this doesnt work you might be low on fluid, or have a bad master or slave cylinder.
If tranny is manual shift you may have a bearing and or bad gear. Try changing tranny fluid. Check manual for correct fluid may use tranny fluid rather than gear oil. I recommend using Royal Purple fluid or gear oil. This very expensive but will slicken up the shifting and extend bearing and gear life.
i had this same problem with mine and all i had to do to fix it was fill up the clutch fluid...i drove my turck like this for one year and the second i filled that up it worked like a dream. try it it might help.
I am dealing with a very similar issue on my 03 Spec V , So far i noticed the clevis pin was loose and the locking hitch pin that slips thru it had fallen out . this caused the gears to not wanna engage due to the bolt behind the clevis which runs to the master cylinder was not getting pressed in when i pushed the clutch pedal in because the clevis pin was slippin on n off giving me no pressure up top .. I had to remove my lower dash panel in order to get visual n hand access to this pin , it is a tight spot to work in as well . May be easist to remove the 4 14mm bolts that hold yur driver seat in to give ya more room to work n stretch out ur arms
