If the fluid level is correct and the transmission will not engage any gear then the transmission has failed and will need to be removed replaced or rebuilt.

Does the shifter move freely or is there resistance?

If it moves freely, the problem is a broken cable. If it has resistance, the problem is in the transmission

88 suburban suddenly won't shift into drive, other gears are fine

As dependable as all the old suburbans must be, they can't defy GM's planned obsolescence schemes forever. I was trying to help a friend keep his '78 suburban's lighting going. It ran great, but looked like half the stuff under the dash had been broken at one time, and patched back together. The wiring was a real colorful mess.
All you can do with the automatics is check the level and condition of the fluid. Never let it run low for long, or it will burn out. If the fluid looks burnt or dark brown, it's probably bad. You would want to have a shop or transmission shop verify or diagnose it to be sure, because rebuilding yours is a huge expense, just as a rebuilt one you could find would be expensive. A used one? You are always taking chances with a used transmission- it's real iffy. Lots cheaper, if you want to roll the dice, lol. Its your call. How fond are you of your suburban? .

Starts fine but when i put in gear it does not go

Did you check the transmission fluid? Low fluid will prevent the vehicle from moving. My General Motors vehicles recommend the transmission fluid be changed every 50,000 miles.

How to check power steering fluid on 87 gmc suburban 2500 4x4

The power steering reservoir has a dipstick attached to the cap you take off to fill the reservoir, it is written on the dipstick what level is normal. Low fluid will not cause any play in the steering worn parts like tie rod ends and worn steering gear boxes will.

How to replace the gear box on a 1997 k1500 4x4 chevy suburban

remove the p/s lines to the gear box, take the nut of the pitman arm and seperate the center link of the pitman arm, remove the front shield, remove three bolts from the side of the frame holding the gear box onto the frame, you will need a puller to remove the pitman arm off the gearbox, reverse procedure to install. add fluid.

1997 SUBURBAN REVS REALLY LOUD AND SOUNDS LIKE IT DOESN'T WANT TO CHANGE GEARS-WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

Sounds like the transmission is slipping. Check the fluid level and make sure it is correct. Vehicle warm, sitting on a level surface, running, transmission in Park. The fluid level should between the marks on the dipstick. The dipstick is on the passenger side of the motor, behind the motor against the firewall.

The fluid should be pinkish, and kind of sweet smelling. If it's browish or burnt smelling you have a transmission problem that will have to be looked at by a shop.

Good luck.
