Question about 2000 Ford Explorer

Air conditioning cked pressure gauge says high, compressor is not running replaced clutch cycling switch on accumualator still won't run. all fuses seem to be ok.

    I have the same problem. Replaced the compressor, accumulator, and the low and high side switches and the compressor to not turn on

Compressor Checks
checkmark.gif Start with the compressor. Does it engage when you turn on the A/C?
If so, the compressor is working and the A/C system probably contains enough refrigerant to make cold air, so the problem is inside the HVAC unit. Replace the motor that controls the blend air door (this is a difficult job and best left to a professional since it involves tearing apart the HVAC unit -- about an 8 to 10 hour job!).
If the compressor does not engage when you turn on the A/C, see if it will run by jumping the compressor clutch wire directly to the battery (use a fused jumper wire). If the compressor works when you jump it, and the A/C blows cold air, the system contains refrigerant and the fault is likely a bad A/C compressor clutch relay or a bad clutch cycling switch or pressure switch.
If the compressor does not engage when you jump it, the problem is a bad compressor clutch.
If the clutch engages but the compressor does not turn (the belt will start to slip and squeal), the compressor is locked up and you need a new compressor.
If the compressor clutch engages and turns the compressor, but the A/C still does not blow cold air, the system is probably low on refrigerant and needs to be recharged.
Refrigerant Checks
checkmark.gif Connect an A/C pressure gauge to the HIGH SIDE service port (located in the high pressure hose that runs between the compressor and the condenser in the front of the engine compartment). The gauge will tell you if there is any pressure in the system. Simply depressing the service fitting valve with a small screwdriver to see if any refrigerant squirts out is NOT an accurate check because it tell you how much pressure is in the system. It may still have some pressure but not enough to trip the low pressure safety switch so the compressor will engage.
If your A/C system is low or out of refrigerant, check for leaks, then have the A/C system vacuum purged to remove air. After the air is out, it can be recharged with the specified amount of refrigerant. It is important to get any air out as this will reduce cooling efficiency and may make the compressor noisy.
A/C System Functional Checks
checkmark.gif If the refrigeration circuit seems to be working (refrigerant in the system, compressor running and building pressure), but there is still no cooling, the problem might be an obstruction in the orifice tube (located in the high pressure hose between the condenser in the front of the radiator, and the evaporator located in the passenger compartment). A blockage here will prevent the refrigerant from entering the evaporator or recirculating through the refrigeration circuit.
If the orifice tube is plugged, the high side pressure reading will be lower than normal, and the low side reading will also be lower than normal because no refrigerant is circulating through the system.
checkmark.gif If the refrigeration circuit seems to be functioning normally (compressor running, frost or condensation on the high pressure line from the condenser to the evaporator), but no cool air is blowing out of the ducts inside the car (and the blower is working), the fault is likely a BLEND AIR door that is stuck in the HEAT position, or possibly a badly clogged cabin air filter that is restricting airflow. Another possibility would be a fault in the automatic climate control system such as a ad interior temperature sensor or control module.

Compressor isnt turning at all dont know if i need new one or if i need new clutch how can i tell


The pulley on the compressor is always running when your engine is running, but the only time
it compresses the freon is when the clutch engages, if the compressor's pulley was not turning,
it would have already snapped a fan belt or your serpentine belt. voltage runs from your fuse box
thru your air condition switch on your dashboard to a low pressure switch that is located at the
accumulator a long cylinder,close to the firewall under the hood or close to the condensor, front
of the car. the switch detects freon pressure in the accumulator, if there is freon pressure, the switch
will stay closed and allow voltage to go to the compressor clutch to engage it and compress the freon,
if there is no freon pressure the switch will open, and there will be no voltage to air compressor, its a
saftey switch to keep your compressor from getting damaged.its possible that the switch could be bad
it may not have voltage at the switch, or it may be open because there is insufficient freon pressure.
check and make sure there is freon in the system.check for voltage at the low pressure switch if you have freon in your system and voltage at the pressure switch, set your ac on high, pull the molex off
the switch, and jump it out with a jumper wire, if the clutch engages and your car starts to cool, just
replace the switch. if the clutch engages but does not cool, then your ac system has some blockage
in the lines. if the clutch does not engage at all then it would be the compressor clutch. good luck!

My air condition is not blowing cold air


best diagnostic method is dual head gauges. balanced pressure between low and high side in the off position is aroung 90 lbs. running low pressure is 20-40 lbs and high pressure 160-200, is the compressior not coming on? does it stay on, or click on and off. either might mean the freon level is low. try unplugging the low pressure switch on the low side supply line and shorting the pigtail wires together with a paper clip. does the compressor stay on now? if so and the air is warm or cool, freon is low. if the air is cold that switch is bad. if compressor still won't come on the list of possibilities grows longer: compressor, comp fan clutch, AC relay, restriction at several places... repair shop time...

YOU NEED A R-134 GAUGE SET TO CHECK LOW PRESSURE SIDE AND HIGH PRESSURE SIDE.YOU ALSO CAN BUY A LITTLE CHEAPER GAUGE TO CHECK YOUR AC LOW BLUE SIDE AND HIGH RED SIDE AT ANY AUTO ZONE OR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS.WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU GET YOUR GAUGE SET HOOK GAUGE TO LOW PRESSURE SIDE BLUE CAP PORT AND GAUGE TO HIGH SIDE PRESSURE RED CAP PORT.YOU CRANK CAR UP GET IT OPERATING TEMPERATURE.THEN TURN AC ON HIGH COOL LET RUN 3 TO 4 MINUTES.CHECK LOW SIDE GAUGE READING SHOULD BE 28 - 32 PSI. When I turn on the ac it blow out hot air.


Do you hear the air conditioning compressor switch on (with the engine running) when you turn on the air conditioning from inside the car. Get a friend to turn on and off the air conditioning while you listen with the hood open engine running you should hear a clicking sound on and off each time the a/c is cycled on and off or the a/c clutch is not locking up the compressor. This may be due to many things (bad clutch, bad compressor, no power to controls or compressor clutch) but it could be a sign of low charge the system has a low pressure switch which prevents the system from being energized if the system has low refrigerant charge. By protecting itself it prevent catastrophic failure of the compressor and ensuing damage to the rest of the a/c system if the system looses it charge. You will need to have the system checked out by someone experienced in air conditioning work who will attach pressure gauges to your car and see if the refrigerant pressures are OK. The system naturally looses some refrigerant over time but if the system constantly looses charge then it has a leak that must be investigated and repaired before just recharging the system

Clutch won't engage on air conditioning compressor


The air gap may be too wide between the clutch disc and plate. It usually happens from wear. You can test this possibility by engaging the clutch electrically as you have done and then push on the disc slightly with the handle of a hammer or screwdriver. Be careful not to get your hand or fingers too close while the engine is running. Basically you are helping the magnetic field pull the disc in. I hope this helps.

A/C compressor clutch won't engage, system won't cool


Sounds to me like its simply ran out of gas!, get the system inspected, the clutch wont engage if there is no pressure in the system, hence the switch problem.
Get it recharged and check for leaks, vehicle with air con will loose around 50grams per year from normal usage, if its been years since it was check it could simply just need recharging.

there is a cycling switch located on the accumulator at the pass side firewall on the heater box if this sticks the compressor will continually run

Air conditioner doesn't work


problems yes low high and high low are usually caused by faulty defective clutch coil or defective thermostat...electrical issues can be cycling switch pressure switches ambient air sensor or fin switch ( evap temp sensor)
Mechanically it could be clutch,or compressor the symptoms are not good... srry hit me back if you got some manual gauges and wanna run pressure test diagnostics..
