Thumping noise when braking - 2001 Sienna

After going through a number of disasters with a Ford 95 Windstar, we purchased a 2001 Sienna, fully decked out. It has been a great van/car - except for one problem. Whenever we slow down and stop, you can hear a "thump-thump-thump" sound from (I believe)the rear of the car. I thought the spare tire might be loose, but that checked out, and I couldn't figure this out. It's VERY noticable. My local Toyota service guy told my wife that this was "normal" for this car, annoying but normal. She doesn't remember what he told her caused it. Before I go down and talk to the service manager, I'd like to be armed with any knowledge some of the folks her can provide. Surely this isn't "normal"? They looked at the rotors and said they were fine, and there is no symptom other than the sound. What could this be? Thanks, Doc 1995 merc/benz c320 wagon thumping begins when braking - like having a flat spot on tires, but tires are good. Dan

I have the same situation with a 2000 Siennna. This van has over 120,000 miles and is running like new. But it has this particular thumping which I cannot figure.

Could be a number of things that you cannot "see".

First, make sure the tire pressures are within the van manufacturers specifications. The tire pressure label will be on the driver side door pillar on a little sticker. Also confirm that the tires haven't been replace with an overly greater / lesser size.

Broken radial belts inside the tires are another cause - and is also dangerous if the tire heats up enough - it's a blowout waiting to happen.

Check for ANY unusual "ripples" on the inner and outer sides of the tires, and for any unusual wear patterns.

Putting the tires on a balancer will NOT show these tire problems.

You could try narrowing the problem down to a particular tire, and putting the spare on and see if the problem goes away.

Also, I have seen "off brand" or "blem" tires do this a lot.

I have a ford windstar which start but does not accelerate fully.

More infromation may be helpful. If your van runs fine at low speeds but will not run properly or shift correctly at speeds of 50 mph or better I would suspect a clogged cataletic converter. If this was helpful please leave good feedback if not please repost with more infromation

I own a 2001 Windstar. Your noisy brake problem could be nothing more that new brakes being broken in. I have done many brake jobs on my 2001 Windstar as well as other vehicles that I have owned. To prevent this problem from occuring, I apply a thin film of Disc Brake Quieter directly to each brake pad during the installation process. This quiets the brakes during the break in period. I hope this helps.

Where do i find the keyless entry code for a 2003 ford windstar

Ford cars and such will put a sticker on the hinge or back gate with the numbers on it. It will just be a white sticker with black numbers. A five digit code. Ford provides this number on a small credit-card type card, inside the Owner's Manual binder.

The 2001 Ford Windstar manual says that the 3 places where the code is located is:
1. On a card (almost business card size) in the glove compartment - my Windstar did not have it (my 1989 Ford Thunderbird had this card and still has it)
2. A sticker that is located on the computer module - this should be located underneath the dash/steering wheel on the driver's side (by the fuze box - bolted to the firewall of the car/van) - my van did not have this sticker on the module.
3. The Dealer - my dealer wants $41+tax to hook up a computer to it to scan the Van's computer

Maybe this will help. On a 95 its behind the lower center storage compartment below the radio.its held on with four plastic screws, remove the screws and remove the storage compartment.the module is bolted on with two 9mm nuts, its black and has a lot of wires running to it. if you push your door lock button you can hear and feal the relays in the module.you can undo the two 9mm bolts and pull the module out enough to read the 5 digit code or leave it bolted and use a mirror to see the backside of the module, but dont unplug anything, its not needed.enter that code and within 5 seconds hold down the 1/2 button for a couple seconds then enter the new 5 digit code within 5 seconds

Good luck.

Sounds like you might have some bad spark plug wires. With motor running, try spraying some water with a spray bottle on the wires and see if any of the wires are arcing to anything, (blue spark)
