Question about 2003 Ford Explorer

2 Answers

03 Explorer (V8) clicked this morning when I tried to start it. Clicked several times, then only once. Got a jump which didn't work at first, then it did. Went to auto parts store, battery tested good. When I started it there it started but clicked at the same time. Starter? Bad terminals?

It sounds like you have a bad starter. Definitly make sure your terminals are clean and tight first. Once you have checked that try to start. If unsuccesful have someone try to crank vehicle while you tap on starter with a hammer or tire iron. This is an old trick that will get a starter to turn over two or three more times. The starter is located under the exhaust manifold usually on the driver side, but sometimes on passenger side. You will see a red or black wire going to the starter. However some of these have problems with the pigtail going to the starter. If tapping on starter with hammer doesn't work I would inspect the pigtail (wire harness going to starter) for corosion or torn wire.

I would clean terminals first. also check your solenoid connections. it is located on the firewall close to the battery. i have seen thease solenoids act up.

Where's starter located on 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac 4x4 it started fine ran to store wouldn't crank it clicked but even with jump it wouldn't start

I would start with the battery first. If your battery lost 1 or 2 cells in it, jumping doesn't help. It's like try to jump a totally dead battery, you have to let it charge up some before it will crank over. Except with a dead cell, it never charges up.

When I tried to starmy 02 Explorer XLT , the starter clicked once. I tryed jumping it, same thing. I tried tto move the shifter, it was stuck. Next I checked the battery voltage, 12.34 volts. The bat

12.34 is barely enough voltage. check for dirty connections at the starter and the battery. if these are okay then check for voltage at the starter large cable it should be battery voltage then with someone trying to start the car check voltage on the small terminal of the starter it should be battery voltage. if you don`t have this on either terminal then check for lose of voltage. what is the voltage at the battery when you try to start the car. if it drops below 11 volts then the battery is weak and either needs to be charged and tested or replaced. even with a jump start attempt a bad battery will not allow enough voltage to start the car. if these items are okay then replace the starter.

04 grand cherokee limited. Started at home fine. Got to gas station and filled up, went to re-start and it clicked once with no restart. Power is fine(lights, radio, power windows, horn) everything works....

You might want to check the starter if you can try tapping it hard with something then try to start it again if it starts then all you need to do is have it changed out if nothing happens then you might also want to check and see if there is a broken fuse link going to the starter I know some vehicles have a fusible link in line with the starter it acts as a fuse but looks like a wire it will burn in half interrupting the voltage to the starter and like you stated everything else will work lights radio horn but the starter will not turn over hope this helps you.
