    I have a 2005 GMC Envoy XL (SLT) MODEL, recently, I cannot start my vehicle, and when it does eventually start, it shows a lock down sign on the dash board. When vehicle is turned off it wouln't start again. I now been parked up and I took it to GMC dealer and was told the scanner is not picking up anything. IS there a was to get past the lock down sign!

    May sound impossible, but most of the problems with the envoys are with the fan clutch! Once it starts going, it sends signals to the computer. The computer changes all types of settings to compensate for the failing fan clutch. Once the fan clutch is replaced, it has to be reset with a computer upgrade download only available at the dealership. I got a bunch of comments on how this could not possibly be the problem,, but with four envoys ranging from 2002 to 2006, and all having the same problem, I can say with absolute confidence, have the clutch fan checked first. then of course the download to your cars computer has to be completed,, so simply changing out the fan clutch may not, probably will not, completely get rid of the problems.

    In cold weather we always had a problem. This morning it wont start and the service engine light is on. I replaced the battery last year for the same problem and now it is doing it again.

Hi,

Factors that can disable starting the engine are:
1. if automatic transmission, should be in Park or Neutral. In some instances, you may need to move the shift lever a couple of time to trigger the hidden switch;
2. anti-theft/alarm system. You may need to check the connectors, disable or the electronic key and try several times;
3. Starting system - the issue is might be with the starter system. The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. At this point, the ignition switch then provides +12VDC to a starter relay (if the vehicle has got one) or straight to the starting solenoid. The relay is but a remote switch with slightly higher amperage capacity. The starter relay then engages and supplies +12VDC to the staring solenoid. The starting solenoid then performs two (2) functions. It provides the switching action (hundreds amps) from the battery heavy cable to the actual starter motor. The solenoid likewise pushes a small pinion gear along the shaft of the starter motor to engage the ring gear. The ring gear is of course on the edge of the flywheel which in turn is attached to the crankshaft.

Starter system problems could be corrected by:
1. check battery, battery cables and connections;
2. charge the battery if required;
3. clean brushes and guides of brush holders of the starter motor;
4. clean the commutator and commutator segments;
5. check/replace the armature or field coils if determined to be defective;
6. in some extreme cases it could be the drive pinion or the flywheel gear ring is defective.
7. often it is the big switch that the solenoid activates that looses contacts causing no +12V internally to the motor.
8. Most likely would be a defective starter relay or the IGN switch itself. Relative to this, you might try and check the connectors/terminals and electrical joints.

In the picture below, the upper portion is the starter solenoid while the one below it is the actual starter.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

2002 Envoy died, no power to anything. No click when trying to start it... just nothing. What the heck could it be? I'm thinking alternator. Before it died tonight, if I were to be pushing the

Sounds like your alternator went out or not making good connection at the battery terminals, preventing the battery from being charged. If the battery does not charge, you will use up the battery energy to maintain the vehicle running UNTIL you deplete the battery. the more accesories you have on, the faster it discharges till the point of killing your ignition on your engine. You definitely have a charging issue, more than likely, your alternator went out.

My battery in my 2002 gmc envoy dies over night what would drain the battery alternator is good

Check and make sure nothing is staying on ie. lights. Check the cells on your battery to make sure they are good. It is possible the battery isn't holding a charge.

My 2002 isuzu trooper, 4.3 liter engine, will not start. The battery is good and fully charged. It has been suggested I remove the alternator and take it in to be tested. How do I remove it.

Hi,all the alternators job is,is to charge the battery,so the alternator has nothing to do with it not starting.now if your battery keeps draining down and you have to recharge it every couple of days,then it would be the alternator that was bad.but if you have a fully charged battery and it still wont start, its another problem! does it turn over and try to start but not start?? or when you turn the key over does it just go click-click-click?? or does it just not make any noise at all when you turn the key over?? it makes a big diffrence which of the three its doing,let me know which one its doing, also you can take your battery to auto-zone and they will load test to see if its holding a charge ok.....just let me know.......yz-maniac.

When i turn the key the escape wont start it just makes a clicking noise?

That noise is probably the starter solenoid rattling because the battery charge is low. Start out with a jump or make sure the battery is fully charged up.

try car to car boost-battery charger may not be working correctly or set on low amp charge -interior lights and dash may all light but battery may not be strong enough to energize starter have battery tested if battery good than check for power to the starter if power-- starter may be shot can remove also and have tested at most auto stores free if no power battery -wiring-or connection issue would need to test fuse panel-ignition switch and starter solenoid

2002 GMC Envoy

If your 2002 gmc envoy or sierra will not even turn over with a kown good battery try starting it in nuetral then go back to park and try starting again. There is a park nuetral safety switch that can malfunction. Turn the key on then shift into nuetral, then turn fully to start.
